Petra Kvitova Discusses Injury, Attack After Release from Hospital

Tim DanielsDec 23, 2016

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was released from the hospital Friday following extensive surgery Tuesday for injuries suffered during a knife attack by an intruder in her Czech Republic apartment.

The 26-year-old former No. 2 player in the world stated she doesn't see herself as a "victim" despite the traumatic experience, according to ESPN.com. Instead, the left-handed power player is focused on resuming her career after her dominant hand fully recovers from the surgery:

"

While what happened to me was very scary, I do not see myself as a victim, I do not feel sorry for myself and I will not look backwards. I will use all my energy to focus on my recovery, and I will do everything I can to return to the sport I love as soon as possible.

I am now looking forward to spending time with my family, and I ask for privacy and peace as I start my journey towards a return to the tennis court.

Kvitova also told reporters the surgeon said the operation went "fine and without complications" in her first comments since the attack.

"I'm happy to tell you I'm feeling well," she said, per ESPN.com. "The medical staff, the police, my family and my team have all provided me with amazing support in this difficult situation."

Although she's cleared the first major hurdle in the comeback process, it's unlikely she'll be back playing competitive tennis until the middle of 2017, at the earliest.

Eoghan Macguire of CNN spoke with Katie Spellman, Kvitova's PR manager, who relayed a six-month timetable as the early forecast for the star getting back on the court.

"The best-case scenario is that Petra will be able to play tennis again after six months," Spellman said. "It is too soon to specify when precisely she can return to competition, but Petra is ready to do everything she can to get back competing at the highest level."

Kvitova is currently ranked No. 11 after an up-and-down 2016 campaign. The season marked the first time since 2009 she didn't reach the quarterfinals of at least one Grand Slam event, though she still finished the year with a 46-23 record and two singles titles.

Based on the initial timetable, she could have an outside shot of getting back in action for the French Open in late May. Wimbledon in early July or the U.S. Open in late August would represent the other opportunities to return for Grand Slam play in 2017.
