Tuesday Recap

The Aces and the Royals have been the best two teams in the competition so far, although the former flexed their muscles with a comprehensive victory in the day’s first match.

Kirsten Flipkens set the tone from the off in her set against Ana Ivanovic. The Aces star was so efficient in her play on Tuesday, nullifying her opponent's main strengths and dominating the general exchanges for a well-deserved a 6-3 win.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - AUGUST 14: Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza of India in action during the mixed doubles bronze medal match against Radek Stepanek and Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic on Day 9 of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at the Olympic Tennis

The rest of the team followed suit. The impressive Aces’ mixed doubles pair of Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza continued to excel, as they were far too strong for Martina Hingis and Pablo Cuevas, while Aces veteran Mark Philippoussis got the better of Thomas Johansson; both sets were 6-3 in the Aces' favour.

With an 18-9 deficit to make up after three stanzas, the Royals needed something of a miracle to win this one and were looking for their team talisman, Tomas Berdych, to launch a comeback:

The Czech raced into a 4-0 lead against Feliciano Lopez to trigger some nerves for the Aces, but the Spaniard got on the board in a 6-2 loss.

It meant the Aces were well in control heading into the final match, as the Royals needed a 7-0 win to take an unlikely victory. Lopez and his doubles partner, Ivan Dodig, won for good measure too, getting the better of Cuevas and Daniel Nestor 6-4 to hand the Aces a straightforward 26-19 victory.

As we can see here, the Aces were delighted with their display afterwards:

Perhaps inspired by the performance of the Aces and the manner in which they flew out of the traps, the Singapore Slammers were also relentless in the early stages of their clash with the Japan Warriors.

Kiki Bertens was tasked with playing the first set for the home team, and she was a 6-2 victor against an out-of-sorts Jelena Jankovic. The Warriors player made a staggering six double faults in the set, as she struggled to find any rhythm whatsoever.

The key set in this one ultimately proved to be the men’s legendary tussle, though. It was an extremely tight affair between the Slammers’ Rainer Schuettler and the Warriors’ Fernando Gonzalez, but eventually, the former snatched the win with a 6-5 triumph.

It was a big boost for the Singapore side. They kept up their high standards in the subsequent mixed doubles, with Bertens and Marcelo Melo hammering Jankovic and Jean-Julien Rojer 6-2.

The Warriors needed a response in the penultimate set, and Rojer and Fernando Verdasco responded. They built up a 5-2 lead and were poised to put the pressure on the Slammers heading into the final set. However, Nick Kyrgios, who was substituted for Melo during the stanza, and Marcos Baghdatis dug deep to take this to a tiebreak.

While Rojer and Verdasco did eventually win the set 6-5, with an eight-point gap on the board, it meant the last leg, which saw Kyrgios up against Verdasco in the singles, was essentially redundant. Nonetheless, Kyrgios added the gloss to the team victory, clinching his set 6-1.
