Smith Placed on Injured Reserve

Tuesday, Oct. 11

The Vikings announced Smith was placed on injured reserve, adding that they signed Jake Long to bolster the offensive line in his absence.

Smith to Undergo Surgery

Monday, Oct. 10

Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer told reporters Smith will undergo surgery Tuesday.

Smith Among Multiple Injured Vikings

Minnesota's offense has been struck hard by the injury bug this season. Teddy Bridgewater, Adrian Peterson and Matt Kalil are all sidelined. Now, Smith has become the latest starter forced into an extended absence.

The right tackle injured his right elbow in the team's Week 4 victory over the New York Giants. Zimmer initially downplayed the potential setback, per Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press: "We'll see how [Smith] is. I'm not concerned."

Now, the injury is worse than originally thought.

Jeremiah Sirles will continue to fill the void at right tackle. Rookie Willie Beavers, who has transitioned to guard since he was selected in the fourth round of this year's draft, also has tackle experience if the team needs him to move back outside.

The Vikings have done an extraordinary job of plugging holes and continuing to win, as their 5-0 record attests. But it's fair to wonder if the mounting number of critical injuries will eventually take its toll.
