Service Woes Cost Nadal
Nadal looked to have rediscovered some fine form at this tournament, although he found the going tough early on against Dimitrov.
Indeed, both men struggled for rhythm on their serves, with the first five games going against the server. It wasn’t until the Bulgarian held in the sixth game and then broke Nadal to go 4-2 up that there was daylight between the two players.

The world No. 4 continued to falter with ball in hand, though, losing on his serve for a fourth time in the set and then the stanza itself 6-2.
Live Tennis provided the numbers behind an unusual set and Nadal fans with a comforting statistic:
"SET #Dimitrov 6-2, sealed with an ace. He's taken sets from #Nadal before but never gone on to win. Will today be the first time? pic.twitter.com/5hMWNXnevs

These woes continued in the second set, though, as Nadal was again broken. While he eventually held serve in the third game, Dimitrov was looking confident and continued to keep the Spaniard at bay.
Nadal improved as the match wore on, although the deficit proved too difficult to make up, as Dimitrov kept his composure on the big points and eventually served out for a semi-final spot.

The Bulgarian will be hoping he faces a weary Raonic in the semis, after the Canadian played two matches on Friday. However, neither Carreno-Busta or Jaziri were able to cope with the power of the Canadian, as he rattled off emphatic straight-set wins.
Murray must have been well aware that Edmund would up his game in their quarter, and the first set proved to be a real war of attrition between the two players.
Edmund, ranked 52 places below world No. 2 Murray, was excellent in the opening stanza, putting pressure on his opponent’s serve and attacking when possible. It meant the first set was decided by a pulsating tiebreak.

The underdog did have one set point at 6-5 in his favour and went on to save three for Murray. However, the top seed eventually took the fourth of the tiebreak to move ahead.
As noted by Stuart Fraser of the Daily Mail, Edmund was set for a landmark result regardless:
The world No. 54 actually broke Murray at the first time of asking in the second set, moving 2-0 ahead. However, the three-time Grand Slam winner upped the ante at this juncture and was able to rattle off six consecutive games on his way to the final four.
Murray will meet David Ferrer in the semis, as the veteran Spaniard overcame German teenager Alexander Zverev in three sets.
In the women’s draw, there was success for Konta over home-crowd favourite Zhang Shuai. After eliminating world No. 4 Simona Halep on Thursday, all eyes were on the Chinese player to see if she could produce some similar heroics. However, the class of the Briton shone through in a 6-4, 6-0 win.
Konta will face Keys in the semi-final, and the WTA Insider Twitter feed noted just how important that one will be for both players:
"How big is the Konta-Keys semi @ChinaOpen?
— WTA Insider (@WTA_insider) October 7, 2016"
Keys wins: Qualifies for @WTAFinalsSG.
Konta wins: Makes Top 10 debut, moves to No.8 in RTS.
Elsewhere, Svitolina continued her fine run in the competition with a confident 7-6 (3), 6-1 win over Daria Gavrilova. The Ukrainian will face Radwanska in the last four provided the third seed can make her way past Shvedova in her quarter-final tussle.
