Why the Redskins can cover the spread

Washington did win the division last year by coming on strong down the stretch and seizing control when no other team seemed to want it. The Redskins have lacked that same kind of desire and determination through the first two games of this season.

But in the NFL, you can never count any team out no matter how bad they look, especially against a division rival. They won five of seven SU and against the spread down the stretch last year, starting with a win over the Giants, and could use this game to turn around their season.

Why the Giants can cover the spread

New York routed Washington, 32-21, as a three-point favorite in the first meeting at MetLife Stadium last year, improving to 10-2 SU in the past 12 head-to-head matchups at home, according to the OddsShark NFL Database.

While the Giants have won their first two games this season by just four points combined, they are picking up steam and look like the clear-cut favorites to win the division in 2016.

New York wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has yet to break out and will get to renew his personal rivalry with Redskins cornerback Josh Norman, who played with the Carolina Panthers last season. Norman has gotten burned plenty in the first two games, giving Beckham a clear edge.

Smart pick

The line is in a dangerous spot for bettors—between a field goal and touchdown in favor of the Giantswhen it probably should be higher, based on Washington's underwhelming performances so far. The question is: Will the public back the Redskins for a third straight week, thinking they will finally break through?

That is too risky of a proposition, so take New York to extend Washington's skid versus winning teams to four ATS.

Betting trends

The Redskins are 2-10 SU in their last 12 games on the road against the Giants.

The total has gone over in six of the Giants' last eight games at home.

The Redskins are 4-18 SU in their last 22 games on the road.
