Rusev vs. Roman Reigns Announced for WWE Clash of Champions 2016 PPV

Raw general manager Mick Foley announced Monday night Rusev will defend the United States Championship against Roman Reigns at Clash of Champions on Sunday, per WWE's official Twitter account.

Rusev and Reigns were originally set to wrestle for the belt at SummerSlam, but Reigns attacked the champion before the bell, leading to a no contest.

A return match at Clash of Champions was all but a foregone conclusion following last week's Raw. Rusev interfered in Reigns' match against Kevin Owens, costing Reigns a shot at the WWE Universal Championship.

It looked like WWE quickly dropped the Reigns/Rusev feud with little explanation after SummerSlam. Finn Balor's shoulder injury shook up the Universal Championship picture, and Reigns was among the wrestlers vying for the newly vacant title.

Reigniting the rivalry makes sense, since SummerSlam brought little closure to the bad blood between Reigns and Rusev. WWE clearly had big plans for the two before Balor's injury, with Reigns interrupting Rusev's wedding celebration with wife Lana on the Aug. 8 edition of Raw.

Pitting Rusev against Reigns should be a recipe for a great match. For all of his flaws, Reigns is a very good worker in the ring, and a physically imposing opponent such as Rusev is a perfect foil.

Putting the U.S. title match on a Raw-only pay-per-view should also give the WWE plenty of time to entertain fans. The match won't get overshadowed, either, at a smaller event. That almost certainly would've been the outcome if they had clashed at SummerSlam, which had nine matches on the main card in addition to three pre-show matches.

Owens' battle with Seth Rollins for the Universal Championship will get the most attention, but Reigns vs. Rusev and the Raw Women's Championship Triple Threat match have a chance to steal the show.
