Davis Cup Tennis 2016: Final Scores and Results from Semi-Finals Bracket

Tom SunderlandSep 18, 2016

Dan Evans was unable to complete an unlikely comeback for Great Britain during Sunday's Davis Cup semi-final action, losing in four sets to Argentina's Leonardo Mayer. Andy Murray had beaten Guido Pella in three sets to tie things up at 2-2 earlier in the day, but Evans' loss means Argentina advance to the final.

They'll meet Croatia, after Marin Cilic beat France's Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 in Sunday's other tie. Lucas Pouille added a second win for France in the dead rubber, beating Marin Draganja.

Read on for a recap of Sunday's scores.

Recap

After suffering defeat at Juan Martin del Potro's hands on Friday, Murray looked like a different player in Sunday's outing, immediately pressing his Argentinian foe in no small part thanks to some phenomenal return play.

Per Flash Scores, the unforced-error count was largely even between the two throughout the match, although some questionable line calls also saw a hint of controversy in the clash.

After storming to a 6-3 win in the opening set, the ailing Scot raced to an even more emphatic 6-2 triumph in the second as Pella undercut his forehand return into the net, as Eurosport UK showed:

The third set happened to be the only set in which Pella actually committed more unforced errors than Murray, and the Briton managed to battle his way to a convincing, straight-set victory.

Again, Pella underhit into the net to suffer his fifth break of the match—while Murray failed to concede a single one—and Glasgow's Commonwealth Arena showed huge support for the home star throughout:

The win gave Evans an opportunity to punch Britain's ticket to the semi-final, and his opponent was Mayer instead of the tired Del Potro. The local favourite rode a wave of momentum in the first set, as the home fans shouted him to a lead, but Mayer's class soon shone through, and he cruised to a relatively easy win.

The Davis Cup's official Twitter account shared the final point:

Elsewhere, Cilic enjoyed a serving masterclass as he dumped Gasquet and France out of this year's Davis Cup:

Cilic collected an impressive 14 aces to Gasquet's two across three sets, trumping his opponent comfortably in first- and second-serve points won, not to mention break points converted.

Gasquet looked like pulling the fixture back at two sets down after leading 5-4 in the third, but Cilic timed a three-game streak to perfection to see out the result and push Croatia into just their second Davis Cup final.

Pouille won his dead rubber against Draganja in comfortable fashion, with Borna Coric pulling out of the match to save his strength.
