Gianni VerschuerenSep 17, 2016

Great Britain kept their 2016 Davis Cup hopes alive in the doubles on Saturday, as Andy Murray and Jamie Murray pulled one back for the defending champions, beating the Argentinian duo of Juan Martin del Potro and Leonardo Mayer in four sets.

The Brits started the day in dominant fashion but suffered a minor meltdown in the second set. The Murray brothers kept their composure in the third and fourth sets, however, grabbing the win. The final scores were 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

In Saturday's other rubber, Croatia took a 2-1 lead, as Marin Cilic and Ivan Dodig beat France's Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut 7-6 (6), 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-3.

Recap

Things did not look great for Great Britain entering Saturday's doubles, but BBC 5 Live's David Law still had hope, particularly if the third match between the two nations went the distance:

He also noticed Del Potro is still as popular as ever, even as a visiting player:

The Murray brothers started the rubber in fantastic form, as Del Potro showed signs of fatigue. The hosts quickly ran out to a lead, winning the first five games and barely breaking a sweat.

But things changed rapidly in the second set. The Argentinians immediately broke serve, jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead, and they pushed their advantage to 4-1 in no time. Jamie Murray took care of the first set points with some big serves, but, per Live Tennis, Del Potro finished things in the following game:

Argentina saved a break point in the second game of the third set, setting up a tense back-and-forth. Great Britain narrowly held serve in the following game, but the visitors followed suit, saving multiple break chances.

The Argentinians finally got the breakthrough in the seventh game, only for the Murray brothers to hit back immediately. Momentum shifted completely, and Great Britain took the next two games as well.

The fourth set was another thriller, with both teams wasting break chances until the very last game, when the Brits found the breakthrough and kept the tie alive heading into the final day of competition.

As shared by Live Tennis, Andy Murray knew he and his team-mates are still in a difficult position:

Andy Murray is expected to cruise to a win over Guido Pella on Sunday, putting the pressure on Kyle Edmund to upset the in-form Del Potro. The Argentinian star has already played a lot of tennis this weekend, and if he is fatigued, an upset is not out of the question.

Meanwhile, Croatia moved one step closer to the Davis Cup final, as Cilic and Dodig beat Herbert and Mahut in a four-set thriller. The Croatian duo needed two tiebreaks on their way to victory and are now the favourites to advance from the tie.
