US Open Tennis 2016: Wednesday Night Draw TV Schedule, Start Times and Picks

Steve SilvermanSep 7, 2016

Serena Williams has passed all of her tests as she prepares to play her quarterfinal match Wednesday night. However, she should get her biggest test of the U.S. Open when she steps on the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium at 7 p.m. to face Simona Halep.

Williams, of course, is the No. 1 seed in the women's tournament. Even though she came into the national championship with shoulder issues, she has been serving better in each of her four matches, and there is no reason to think she won't be at her best against Halep.

However, the fifth-seeded Romanian has been playing spectacular tennis herself to this point in the tournament.

She has run over four straight opponents, including a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Carla Suarez-Navarro in the fourth round.

Halep has lost just one set in the tournament, as she defeated Timea Babos 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 in the third round.

The victory over Babos was her most impressive of the tournament, because her opponent demonstrated significant power in taking the second set. In the past, that would have rocked Halep, but she stayed calm in the final set and got excellent depth on her ground strokes. That allowed her to regain control of the match.

Halep told Hannah Wilks of Live-Tennis that she is quite confident as she moves into the quarterfinals. "My game now I feel is the best that I had ever, because I feel strong on my body. I feel that I can control every tactic during the match. I can change. I'm able to change the tactic when I need," Halep said.

While Halep's state of mind is strong and she has no physical problems, she will need to pick up her game further against the queen of women's tennis.

Williams has won all four of her matches in straight sets, but she has not faced a seeded opponent to this point. That changes against Halep, but it's a matchup that favors the top seed.

Halep has excellent power, but that is Serena's strength and her edge in that department will likely prove the difference in the match.

After Williams and Halep finish their match, No. 3 seed Stan Wawrinka and Juan Martin del Potro will meet at 9 p.m.

Even though Del Potro was not recognized with a seed before the start of the tournament, it is not a surprise to see him reach the quarterfinal round.

Del Potro had an excellent showing at the Olympics in Rio last month. He defeated Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal to reach the finals, and he pushed gold medalist Andy Murray hard before settling for the silver medal.

Del Potro is an excellent player who has been slowed by a long history of wrist problems. Now that he is healthy, he is winning matches again.

Wawrinka is a difficult player to compete against because of his excellent ground strokes and his relentless play. However, if he falls behind Del Potro early, it could be difficult to overcome that deficit.

The 27-year-old Del Potro has not dropped a set yet in the tournament. He had an easy time in the fourth round as Dominc Thiem had to retire in the second set. He also has done quite well against Wawrinka, winning four matches in a row against him.

Del Potro says he is thrilled to have reached the quarterfinals, but he may be playing possum and preparing for an attack on his 31-year-old opponent.

"I didn’t expect to be in the quarters in my second Grand Slam after my comeback," Del Potro told Greg Logan of Newsday. "I’m so happy to be a part of the last eight. Everything can happen, so I will try to be there."

Expect Del Potro to be even happier when the match is over and he moves on to the U.S. Open semifinals.
