Novak Djokovic vs. Kyle Edmund: Score and Reaction from 2016 US Open

Scott PolacekSep 4, 2016

Novak Djokovic finally finished a match at the 2016 U.S. Open after a walkover in the second round and Mikhail Youzhny's retirement in the first set of their third-round match Friday. And it was evident why Djokovic is the top-ranked player during his quick win over Kyle Edmund in the fourth round Sunday.

Djokovic handled Edmund 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals.

Stuart Fraser of the Daily Mail said it took on the "feel of a first-round match" as the world's No. 1 player advanced in Flushing Meadows, New York.

The talent disparity was clear, especially in the first-serve department. According to the U.S. Open's official website, Djokovic won 75 percent of his first-serve points, compared to 53 percent for Edmund. That difference helped the victor overcome seven double-faults.

ESPN Tennis noted it was business as usual for Djokovic in the round of 16:

Djokovic wasted little time establishing himself as the clear favorite as he earned multiple early breaks to seize a 6-2 win in the first set. The 29-year-old notched two aces in the opening set and won 14 of 16 points on his first serve.

Writer Juan Jose Vallejo questioned Edmund's initial strategy:

The U.S. Open shared one of Djokovic's impressive winners:

It was more of the same in the second set, as the Serbian star won the first four games behind two breaks. Edmund got on the board by holding serve in the fifth and pushed Djokovic to deuce in the next game, but the 12-time major champion prevailed and won the second set 6-1.

Mike Dickson of the Daily Mail reacted to the dominance on display:

Djokovic continued to look like an unbeatable machine, winning the first two games of the third set. However, Edmund broke back and tied the set at 2-2. Dickson noted the trainer had to work on Djokovic's right arm after the break, which was the "first sign of any frailty" from the Serb.

Djokovic continued to struggle in the next game, when Edmund earned another break to go ahead 3-2.

However, it was only a brief boost of momentum for the underdog, and Djokovic broke back. The two players were back on serve at 4-4 before Djokovic closed out the win in the final two games.

What's Next?

Next up for Djokovic is a showdown with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals Tuesday.

Tsonga is fresh off an impressive four-set victory against Jack Sock, but he will be tested against the world's top-ranked player. Djokovic holds a 15-6 career advantage in head-to-head matches with Tsonga. Djokovic, who has won their last two matches and 11 of the last 12, should have plenty of confidence heading into the next one.

He also has fresh legs following his free passes out of the second and third rounds and his quick match Sunday, so Tsonga will be hard-pressed to earn an upset.

Post-Match Reaction

Djokovic talked about his victory after the match, via Kevin Mitchell of the Guardian: “I thought I came out of the blocks really well playing with high intensity, and obviously it’s not easy waiting the entire day to start and starting at 10:30 in the evening to start off with the right intensity, but I think I did.”

He also looked ahead to his next matchup, via Mitchell: “It’s going to be obviously tough against Jo, who has been playing some great tennis. He dropped only one set en route to the quarterfinals, so I’m looking forward to that one. I had some great matches against him in the past.”

Djokovic looked ready for another one during his win on Sunday.
