Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte: Winner and Reaction from WWE SummerSlam 2016
Charlotte defeated Sasha Banks to become the WWE women's champion for the second time Sunday at SummerSlam.
WrestlingINC.com provided details on how the match ended:
SummerSlam's Twitter account captured Sasha's reaction after the match:
The focus of the match was on Sasha's back. A botched move off the top rope from Charlotte resulted in an awkward landing for her opponent, who labored through much of the match.
Overall, there were more than a few dangerous moves that wowed the crowd.
SummerSlam shared one of the highlights:
Wade Keller of PWTorch and WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross both wondered whether the two Superstars were asked to do too much in the ring:
But ultimately it was an entertaining match, as Ryan Glasspiegel of the Big Lead noted:
The Boss entered SummerSlam as the titleholder after beating Charlotte for the belt on the first post-draft edition of Raw. Sasha and The Nature Girl engaged in one of the best main-roster women's matches in recent memory on that night, and it resulted in Sasha achieving her childhood dream.
By virtue of the victory, Sasha ended Charlotte's 300-plus-day reign as champion that dated back to the Divas Championship prior to its rebranding as the Women's Championship at WrestleMania.
Despite that loss, WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair's daughter was confident she would get the title back at SummerSlam:
Sasha displayed plenty of her own swagger, though, pointing out that she humbled Charlotte in their encounter on Raw, as WWE Universe showed:
The two transcendent Superstars have a long history together as both friends and rivals. Their interaction dates back to NXT, as they were initially part of The Beautiful Fierce Females faction with Summer Rae.
Sasha and Charlotte eventually broke away and went on to enjoy success as singles competitors.
Charlotte was the first to win the NXT Women's Championship, but The Boss beat her for it before they were both eventually called up to the main roster at the same time last summer.
They have been in direct competition for the WWE Women's Championship ever since, and while Sasha was often forced to take a backseat in the process, she stepped to the forefront when she defeated Charlotte on Raw.
Sasha and Charlotte promise to have many more battles with the title hanging in the balance over the years, but their clash at SummerSlam was the biggest thus far thanks to the stage on which it took place.
SummerSlam is WWE's second-biggest pay-per-view of the year, behind only WrestleMania, and the fact that it occurred at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, was significant in that Sasha and Bayley put on what many considered to be the best match of 2015 at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn in the same venue.
While Sasha and Charlotte didn't reach that bar, they put on another fine performance and showed again that they have excellent in-ring chemistry.
The win guarantees that Charlotte will remain a focus point of Raw's women's division, and it likely means at least one more match between her and Sasha is on the horizon.
Raw has an impressive women's roster, with Nia Jax, Paige and Dana Brooke being among the top complementary players.
But Sasha and Charlotte proved to be on top of their games Sunday, and they will continue to carry the load for women's wrestling moving forward.
