Siemian Named Broncos Starter

Monday, Aug. 29

Andrew Mason of the Broncos' official website passed along word that head coach Gary Kubiak announced to the team on Monday that Siemian had won the job, beating out Sanchez and Lynch.

Kubiak Comments on QB Battle

Sunday, Aug. 28

"I've got a lot invested and a lot of work that I can make some decisions off of now," Kubiak said following the Broncos' preseason win against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday, per ESPN.com's Jeff Legwold. "I'll do that. Does that mean I'm going to do it [Sunday] or Monday? I don't know. I've got enough going on that I can make a decision."

Siemian threw for 122 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Saturday's game, and Kubiak discussed his performance, via Legwold

"

I'm impressed. I think he's very calm. I can tell by the way he handles the team in the huddle, he's got control of what's going on. Gets a bad break on the 'go' ball and comes right back and goes down the field. I think what I see is a guy getting better. ... I've got a lot of work to do. I'm going to make a decision this week. ... I'm going to do that, but at the same time, I've got a lot of things going on. I'll take my time and do it the right way.

"

Kubiak also talked about his decision to play Lynch and sit Sanchez:

"

I, obviously, thought about it all week long. I sat down with Mark this morning, before breakfast. I said, 'Mark, I'm going to play Paxton in the second [half], and if things go the way I think, and Trevor plays as long as I think he's going to play, then I'm not going to put you in there with four or five minutes to play.' Bottom line: I've got a lot to go on on Mark. He's played a lot of football. I need to see the other two kids play.

"

Siemian Comments on Position Battle

Sunday, Aug. 28

"I feel confident. Ultimately it's up to [Kubiak]; it's a better question for him," Siemian said, per LegwoldWhen asked if he believed he had done enough to earn the starting role, Siemian said: "I do, but again, that's not my call. I'll just try to be the best teammate I can be."

Ryan Koenigsberg of BSNDenver.com passed along a look at the Broncos depth chart, which has Sanchez and Siemian sharing the top spot at the quarterback position.

Williams Comments on Broncos QB Battle

Thursday, July 21

Broncos nose tackle Sylvester Williams appeared on SiriusXM NFL Radio, weighing in on why he believes the starting job is Sanchez's to lose:

Report: Siemian 'Has a Legitimate Chance to Win the Job'

Monday, July 18

Speaking on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Siemian is working his way into Denver's quarterback battle.

Siemian Emerged in Training Camp Despite Lack of Experience

Siemian appeared in just one game last year and has yet to attempt a pass in the regular season. Of course, Brock Osweiler was only nominally more experienced before he took over for Peyton Manning. Osweiler was 17-of-30 for 159 yards and one touchdown in his first three seasons.

Siemian did perform well in the 2015 preseason. He completed 23 of his 40 attempts for 283 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in three games.

On July 10, Mason wrote that the second-year signal-caller was making a big impression on Denver's staff:

"

Those whose opinions truly matter -- the coaches -- aren't dismissing Siemian, so that's the key thing. ...

But he's made it to the second year; every day he remains with the Broncos, his chances of a long career increase. He showed promise last year in the preseason, particularly in terms of his poise and command; he showed the intangibles of an NFL quarterback. His accuracy has improved; based on practice, he has crossed that 60-percent threshold that is now a baseline for being an NFL passer.

"

Kubiak is taking a leap of faith in installing Siemian as the starting quarterback for Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers. But that would have been the case no matter which QB selected.

Both Siemian and Lynch are unproven in the NFL, while Sanchez is a career 56.7 percent passer with two more touchdowns (86) than interceptions (84) over his six years in the league.

As was the case last year, Denver's Super Bowl chances will likely hinge on the performance of the defense. The Broncos won a title in 2015 despite shaky QB play, but repeating the feat will be difficult in 2016, especially with Danny Trevathan and Malik Jackson playing elsewhere.
