Manchester United Transfer News: Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo in 4-Man Exit Rumours
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly put four players up for sale at Old Trafford—Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Juan Mata.
According to the Daily Record's Duncan Castles, the Special One believes the three Louis van Gaal signings and the Spaniard are no longer needed at the club, and their sales can make way for new "fundamental" and "supplementary" players.
Bleacher Report UK's Sam Tighe believes Blind, Rojo and Mata could be at risk of leaving this summer:
Blind is seemingly down the pecking order in midfield, while Mourinho isn't convinced he "possesses the physical stature to be first choice in his defence."
While the Dutchman isn't the strongest or the quickest, he formed a surprisingly effective partnership with Chris Smalling last season and helped the Red Devils boast the joint-best defence in the Premier League last season.
Football writer Liam Canning was impressed with his efforts:
Further, he possesses strong technical abilities and is comfortable in possession, with excellent distribution. Per Squawka Dave, Blind frequently tries to move the ball forward rather than just sideways:
Indeed, while he may not command a starting berth at Old Trafford next season, his versatility and consistent performances make him an invaluable squad player.
Rojo has put forward a far less convincing case for staying at United, particularly with Luke Shaw set to resume his position at left-back and the variety of options in front of him in the centre.
The Argentinian made just 16 league appearances last season and wasn't particularly impressive. Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News believes he's been subpar:
WhoScored.com threw a spanner in the works, however, as it noted the Red Devils have actually been better at both ends of the pitch with him on it:
Nevertheless, he's been the weakest of the four players on the exit list, so it wouldn't be at all surprising if he were moved on.
Perhaps because of his huge reputation, Schweinsteiger received criticism from some sections of United support last season as he struggled to make an impact during the 18 league appearances he made.
Canning believes the German is worth persevering with, though:
His performances for Die Mannschaft at UEFA Euro 2016 certainly showed he's still capable of operating at a high level, per the M.E.N's Stuart Mathieson:
Indeed, the 31-year-old may not be the most mobile of midfielders—and if he plays alongside the similarly limited Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini next season that could pose a problem—but he's still more than capable of doing a job for United in midfield and adding a touch of class.
As for Mata, his days appeared to be numbered when Mourinho joined given their history—the Portuguese sold him when they were at Chelsea together—and Henrikh Mkhitaryan's arrival will only hasten his exit in all likelihood.
There's deadwood to be cleared out of the United squad, and it certainly seems as though Mata and Rojo might be among those sold, but Schweinsteiger and Blind deserve another season.
