Barcelona Transfer News: Latest on Samuel Umtiti and Gokhan Gonul Rumours

Rory MarsdenJun 16, 2016

Barcelona and Lyon have still yet to reach an agreement over the transfer of Samuel Umtiti, according to the defender's brother and agent, Yannick Umtiti, but he is reportedly in talks with the Blaugrana.

Widespread reports have indicated that the 22-year-old's move to the Camp Nou is all but done, per Mundo Deportivo (via Spanish football writer Guillem Balague):

However, Yannick Umtiti denied that personal terms had been settled between his brother and Barca after Lyon's president, Jean-Michel Aulas, said the two clubs had not decided on a fee, per Foot01 (via Sport): "[If] there's no agreement in place, there will not be an agreement between Samuel and FC Barcelona."

Sport's report is adamant there is an agreement in place between Umtiti and the Blaugrana, and a fee—likely in the region of €30 million (£23.9 million)—is all that remains to be decided upon.

Lyon are expected to drive a hard bargain, and while French football writer Robin Bairner has reported the two clubs have not come to a fee, the player is said to be "in discussions" with Barca:

Barcelona have been planning to bolster their defence for some time and reportedly have €40 million (£31.8 million) set aside to fund a deal, per Ed Malyon in the Mirror.

Malyon added that Paris Saint-Germain's Marquinhos was their first target, but Umtiti is a fine alternative as he "fits the bill" for Barca, being a young defender who "could grow into something special."

He is already very experienced for such a young player, having made 131 Ligue 1 appearances for Lyon since he made the step up to the senior team in 2011, per WhoScored.com.

Also able to play at left-back, Umtiti is comfortable on the ball and is very adept at interrupting opposition forays forward, per WhoScored.com:

Despite the claims of his brother, Umtiti's switch to Barca seems inevitable, and he should be a fine addition to a centre-back unit currently dominated by Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano.

Meanwhile, Fenerbahce right-back Gokhan Gonul is reportedly on Barcelona's radar and could join the club on a free transfer when his contract expires in Turkey at the end of June, per Sport.

Barca need a new addition for the right side of their defence, as long-time servant Dani Alves is set to leave the club, most likely to join Juventus, per Italian football writer David Amoyal:

The 31-year-old Gonul—currently with Turkey at Euro 2016—is an experienced player, and his arrival could soften the blow of Alves' departure.

He has been a key part of the Fener side since he moved to the club in 2007 and can be effective as both a defensive and attacking force on the right flank, but he will have big shoes to fill if he does indeed become Alves' replacement at the Camp Nou.
