According to Antony Kastrinakis of the Sun, City were "in pole position to land him," with the 29-year-old having worked with manager Guardiola in their Barcelona days.
The winger reportedly came close to making a return to the Camp Nou last season, and while that "fell through," the Blaugrana were long linked with re-signing him.
According to Sport's Ivan San Antonio, the Catalan giants' "interest in Nolito stems back to the summer of 2014" before their attempt to sign him in January this year.
Nolito Provides Scoring Punch Despite Down Season in 2015
Nolito garnered widespread attention during the 2014-15 season, in which he racked up 13 goals and as many assists in 36 games.
Last year, he wasn't quite as productive—scoring 12 and assisting seven, though in seven fewer games—but his form was enough to earn him a place in Spain's 2016 UEFA European Championship squad and a starting berth in their opening game.
The Sky Blues could use another player to share Sergio Aguero's goalscoring responsibilities, and Nolito is more prolific than either Raheem Sterling or Jesus Navas, so he could be a useful acquisition.
As a La Masia graduate, he's also intimately familiar with Guardiola's tiki-taka philosophy, which could potentially ease his transition into English football.
