USA vs. Paraguay Betting Odds Preview, Copa America Prediction

OddsShark.comJun 9, 2016

The United States bounced back from a shutout loss to Colombia in their Copa America opener by blanking Costa Rica 4-0 on Tuesday and will now try to defeat a winless Paraguay team Saturday in Philadelphia.

The Americans are +105 betting favorites (bet $100 to win $105) against Paraguay at sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark, and they will be looking to stay among the top two teams in Group A with a draw or victory that would advance them to the quarterfinals next week.

Match Odds: USA +105, Paraguay +270, Draw +240

Paraguay has scored only one goal combined in its first two games, which is one more than Costa Rica has totaled so far. However, those teams find themselves with one point each after a draw last Saturday. This is a must-win match for Paraguay’s hopes of making it to the quarters, while the United States needs only one point to move on after routing Costa Rica.

The United States sits at +2000 on the odds to win the Copa America; Paraguay is at +8000.

The Americans have little chance to overtake Colombia for first place in Group A, so their motivation to win may not be as strong as it was prior to taking on Costa Rica. The Colombians have already earned six points, courtesy of two wins, and will face the Costa Ricans on Saturday in Houston. But the U.S. also wants to stay sharp in anticipation of a potential quarterfinal matchup with unbeaten Brazil next Friday in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Against Costa Rica, the United States got goals from Clint Dempsey, Jermaine Jones, Bobby Wood and Graham Zusi. The Americans outshot the Costa Ricans 12-7, including 5-2 on goal, which was much different than their performance versus the Colombians. The U.S. was outshot 13-12 in that 2-0 loss, including 7-2 on goal.

Paraguay struggled against Costa Rica with just one shot on goal compared to four for its opponent in the draw, and that obviously does not bode well here, although the team did perform much better in a 2-1 loss to Colombia on Tuesday.

The question is, how well will Paraguay perform in this spot after going all-out versus the Colombians? It trailed 2-0 but did not give up, and Victor Ayala scoring in the 71st minute to make it more competitive. Look for Paraguay to play desperate again in another close loss as the Americans tighten up their defense and post their second consecutive shutout.

USA vs. Paraguay Prediction: 1-0 United States
