Modric Reportedly Out vs. Spain
Friday, June 17
According to football writer Aleksandar Holiga, Croatia's team doctor said Friday following the 2-2 stalemate with the Czechs that the Real Madrid standout will not be available to take on Spain.
The official nature of Modric's ailment was not revealed, but Gary Lineker noted that he limped off the pitch when he was removed Friday.
Modric was enjoying a superb performance and was a big reason why Croatia led 2-0 at the time of his departure.
His strong play even led to a massive compliment from Chelsea forward Isaiah Brown:
After Modric left the match, however, the Czech Republic came back to tie it.
The midfielder is undoubtedly Croatia's most vital player, operating as the team's playmaker in the centre of the park. His impeccable passing and vision not only helps keep possession ticking over but creates countless chances as well.
In his absence, the team will likely call upon Mateo Kovacic. Should the 22-year-old be given the opportunity to play in Modric's stead, he'll need to take it with both hands.
The Croatian is almost peerless in his position, though, so it's imperative for Croatia's ambitions that he be fit and available to play.
Croatia's needed result against Spain depends upon the outcome between Spain and Turkey on Friday, but if they need even a single point in order to advance, that will be a tall order without their best player.
