Indy 500 Results 2016: Live Analysis, Standings and Highlights
Rookie Alexander Rossi bested a field of veterans with a terrific fuel conservation strategy to win the 100th edition of the Indianapolis 500.
Rossi remained out on the track while the rest of the leaders dropped down to pit road to receive a splash of fuel. The driver of the No. 98 car cruised to the checkered flag and ran out of fuel shortly after. He had to be towed off the track as he ran out of gas just after winning the race.
Carlos Munoz, who fought for first place over the final 10 laps before heading to pit road, secured a second-place finish. Had the race gone for one more lap, Munoz may have eclipsed Rossi with a fresh amount of fuel.
Josef Newgarden, who shared first with Munoz before the final round of stops, earned third place. Tony Kanaan placed fourth, while Charlie Kimball earned fifth.
JR Hildebrand, James Hinchcliffe, Scott Dixon, Sebastien Bourdais and Will Power rounded out the top 10. Three-time champion Helio Castroneves finished in 11th place.
