Charlotte vs. Natalya: Winner and Reaction from WWE Extreme Rules 2016

Mike ChiariMay 22, 2016

Charlotte cemented her status as the most dominant women's wrestler in WWE on Sunday night at Extreme Rules as she defeated Natalya in a submission match to retain the WWE Women's Championship.

Thanks to an appearance by Dana Brooke, who distracted Natalya, Charlotte was able to force a submission, via WWE:

WWE shared a video of Brooke's entrance, which was similar to that of a former legend who was banned from ringside, Ric Flair:

Wade Keller of PWTorch.com and Kevin Berge of Questionable Critics provided their initial takes on the match:

Natalya shared her thoughts on the match via Twitter:

After Charlotte defeated both Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch to retain the rebranded women's title at WrestleMania, Nattie stepped up as the No. 1 contender and looked to humble the arrogant champion.

That led to a match at Payback that saw Flair in Charlotte's corner and Bret Hart in Natalya's. While Nattie gave Charlotte a run for her money, the Flairs showed why they are considered the dirtiest players in the game.

The Nature Boy paid off referee Charles Robinson to ring the bell while Charlotte had Natalya in the Sharpshooter, which brought back memories of the infamous Montreal Screwjob involving Hart and Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series in 1997.

Nattie was granted a rematch because of the circumstances surrounding the finish of the bout at Payback, but Stephanie McMahon added a couple of twists by making it a submission match and banning Flair from ringside.

While Charlotte was upset with the decision, she displayed plenty of confidence leading up to Extreme Rules:

Charlotte and Nattie have a long history together that goes beyond the natural rivalry between the Flairs and the Harts.

Their first notable interaction came in the final of the NXT Women's Championship tournament at NXT TakeOver in 2014. They put on a fantastic match and may have set the wheels in motion for the women's wrestling revolution that has picked up steam within the company.

They also put on a great showing at the Roadblock WWE Network special prior to WrestleMania, so many expected Charlotte and Natalya to shine brightly at Extreme Rules, especially with a fitting stipulation in place.

Flair's banishment added an intriguing layer to the story as well, since Charlotte required his help in most of her title defenses prior to Extreme Rules.

Despite that, Charlotte proved herself with another win at Extreme Rules and continued to run roughshod over the women's division.

With two victories over Natalya to her credit, it seems likely that she will move on to face a new challenger, although it is difficult to say who that may be.

She recently defeated both Sasha and Becky, and unless WWE decides to call up Bayley from NXT, there aren't many great options in terms of babyface challengers.

WWE has built up a strong, impressive heel at the top of the women's division, though, which ensures that whoever beats her will become a Superstar immediately after dethroning her.
