Silas Redd Suspended Indefinitely: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Adam WellsApr 12, 2016

Washington running back Silas Redd Jr. has been suspended by the NFL again for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

The league confirmed Redd's indefinite suspension Tuesday in a statement released on Washington's team website.

This marks the second time in six months that Redd has been suspended as a result of violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy. He lost four game checks last November for failing a drug test.

Redd was suspended for that previous failed test but was on injured reserve after tearing his ACL and MCL during a preseason game against the Cleveland Browns, so he did not miss any additional time as a result of the suspension.

This was going to be a big year for Redd, who only played sparingly as a rookie in 2014. He appeared in 15 games, racking up 75 rushing yards and one touchdown on 16 carries and 107 receiving yards on eight catches.

Washington let Alfred Morris leave via free agency. Matt Jones is the starter by default right now, but his 3.4 yards-per-carry average doesn't give him a stranglehold on the job. Chris Thompson looked good in limited duty, averaging 6.2 yards on just 35 carries, but Washington may not ask him to carry the ball 150-200 times.

While Redd was not going to be a workhorse running back given his limited touches and the fact he was coming off a serious knee injury, his presence would have given head coach Jay Gruden another option to play with.

Now, Washington will likely have no choice but to address the running back spot at some point in the draft. Redd was presumably on thin ice already, having been waived/injured after hurting his knee, but was placed on injured reserve after no team claimed him.

The 24-year-old was an undrafted free agent who played for Penn State and USC in his college career.
