Undefeated High School Wrestler Lets Opponent with Special Needs Win

Vanessa de BeaumontJan 27, 2016

Norton High School wrestler Devin Schuko was undefeated throughout his senior season—with one notable exception.

Soon after eclipsing 100 career wins, capping off a tremendous 27-0 campaign, Schuko was taken to the ground by a young man representing the Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School team.

His opponent? An eager, smiling wrestler with special needs named Andy Howland.

Schuko said he was more than happy to reward Howland for his hard work and dedication, per Paul Burton of Boston’s WBZ-TV:

"

We shook hands, and we locked up, and he was a tough kid. And he bulldogged me over to my back. I couldn’t stop the power. I’ve been in sports all my life and wrestling, I believe, is most demanding and for someone like Andy to wrestle and stick with it, I wanted to make his day.

"

Within a matter of moments, the referee blew his whistle, and, in a timeless display of sportsmanship, a cheerful Howland was determined the victor.

Congrats to both Howland on the win and to Schuko for embracing the power and responsibility of leadership.
