Missing out on this year's Pro Bowl may have actually been more difficult than earning a trip to Hawaii. The Elias Sports Bureau (via ESPN Stats & Info) noted Tuesday that 133 players were named to the 2016 Pro Bowl, a record for the event.

Players from the two Super Bowl teams are excluded from playing in the game, while others are injured and unable to play. ESPN's Andrew Brandt implied other players may be looking for a reason to skip the event:

Michael Schur, who co-founded Fire Joe Morgan, believes the roster situation is getting ridiculous:

The Draw Play's Dave Rappoccio argued the roster turnover has devalued the Pro Bowl:

Being named a Pro Bowler is considered an honor, but having 100-plus players on the team takes some of that luster away. The NFL has tried various tactics to drive up interest in the game, but all of that is undercut when so many stars bow out.

It's understandable why players are loath to take part in an exhibition game after a grueling regular season. Going forward, the NFL might be best served by incentivizing active participation in the Pro Bowl.
