Derrick Henry Breaks Alabama Single-Season Rushing Record

Danny WebsterNov 28, 2015

At a program where the likes of Mark Ingram, Shaun Alexander, Eddie Lacy, T.J. Yeldon and Trent Richardson have run, Derrick Henry now sits atop the Alabama Crimson Tide record books.

The Alabama running back and Heisman Trophy candidate broke the program's single-season rushing record during Saturday's game against the in-state rival Auburn Tigers, per Alex Martin Smith of SEC Country.

Henry broke the record that Richardson set in 2011 with 1,679 yards. The star Alabama tailback broke the mark in eight fewer carries than Richardson and passed Ingram's mark of 1,658 yards (in 2009) with only four more carries.

With at least one more game to go in Alabama's season (possibly three, should it win the SEC Championship Game and its College Football Playoff semifinal matchup), Henry has a great chance to distance himself in the record books. Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman provided key evidence as to why Henry is a front-runner for the Heisman Trophy:

Many Alabama running backs have come and gone, but Henry may be the best surefire talent to come out of college in recent years and should be the first running back taken in the NFL draft next year.
