Hearn Comments on Potential Return

"The rib injury, he's not going to be ready until next year," Brook's promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport, told BoxingScene.com's Declan Taylor, per Edward Chaykovsky of BoxingScene.com.

Brook Title Defence on Hold

Friday, Oct. 16

As reported by Nick Parkinson of ESPN, the Sheffield fighter was supposed to be defending his IBF welterweight title against the Argentinian on Oct. 24 in his hometown.

Parkinson explained in his piece how the injury occurred at the end of a sparring session. “After spending Thursday afternoon in hospital and having scans, the decision was taken to postpone the fight until later in the year,” he said.

Brook took to social media to express his disappointment he would not be able to box as scheduled:

It was proposed in Parkinson’s piece the fight could be moved to the O2 Arena, London, on Dec. 12, when heavyweight sensation Anthony Joshua is set to go up against Dillian Whyte for the British title. The venue is already sold out.

Hearn revealed last month they will look to “reschedule the bout for the end of the year,” per Parkinson.

It is a major blow for Brook, who would have been hoping to get past Chaves and prepare himself for bigger challenges in 2016. Indeed, compatriot Amir Khan recently revealed an all-British showdown between the pair is a possibility in the future, per BBC Sport.

Those who had tickets for the Sheffield Arena showdown will be hugely disappointed they won’t get to see one of their own in action and will be devastated should the fight get moved to the capital.

Still, a sell-out crowd at an illustrious venue like the O2 would provide a stellar backdrop for one of the sport’s rising stars if he can get back to full fitness in time.
