Samuel Japhet-Mathias to Wake Forest: Demon Deacons Land 4-Star C Prospect
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons suffered some growing pains in Danny Manning's first season as head coach, but the 49-year-old is hard at work building for the future. On Tuesday, he secured the commitment of 4-star center Samuel Japhet-Mathias.
In a post on Made Hoops, Japhet-Mathias confirmed he'll join the Demon Deacons as part of their 2016 recruiting class:
"I am very excited to announce that I am committing to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons for the class of 2016. I decided to choose Wake Forest because I trusted myself with my decision and the coaching staff that I will progress there. I know nothing will come easy and that it will be a tough transition, but I couldn't be more ready to take it all on and start up a new and exciting journey for myself.
"
According to 247Sports' composite rankings, the Saxtons River, Vermont, native is the No. 90 player overall and the No. 11 center in the 2017 recruiting class. The center reclassified to 2016, however, after transferring to the IMG Academy.
Alex Kline of the Recruit Scoop believes Japhet-Mathias will fit in well with Wake:
"Really like the way Samuel Japhet-Mathias runs the floor for someone of his size. He plays hard & should do well under Danny Manning.

The Fayetteville Observer's Bret Strelow is already drawing parallels between the 6'10" big man and a former Demon Deacon great:
Japhet-Mathias' arrival will occur at a great time for Manning. Devin Thomas, last year's leading rebounder and second-leading scorer, will graduate after this season, leaving a major hole inside for the Demon Deacons.
Japhet-Mathias is a skilled player who continues to improve. He'll provide instant inside scoring and will help the team take the next step in its overall progression under Manning.
