Atletico Madrid vs. Getafe: Winners and Losers from La Liga Game

Rik SharmaSep 22, 2015

Atletico Madrid beat neighbours Getafe 2-0 at the Vicente Calderon thanks to two goals from Antoine Griezmann.

The French striker netted in the fifth minute and then again in the 90th as his team picked up a deserved three points.

It was not a fun evening for anyone, with the Rojiblancos failing to get truly into their stride and the visitors only creating two chances of note.

Here are the winners and losers from the clash, which leaves Atletico top of the table with 12 points, although having played a game more than FC Barcelona, who are second, with the same number of points.

Winner: Antoine Griezmann

Where else to start but with Atletico Madrid marksman Antoine Griezmann?

The French forward scored twice, both from close range, to give his team the victory.

His first goal was well-taken, controlling the ball after Gabi hooked it back into the box, swivelling and then firing home.

The second was put on a plate for him by Jackson Martinez, who cut it back to give Griezmann a tap-in.

He has become the key Atletico Madrid player, the one who has to feature, regardless of his strike-partner.

Simeone worked with him through last season and saw Griezmann improve, and he just keeps going.

He has as many goals as Lionel Messi in La Liga this season, with three in five games, and while he obviously isn't as good as the Argentine, is just as important to his side.

Loser: Getafe

Performance-wise, Fran Escriba's men did as well as they could.

They defended strongly, keeping Atletico's forwards at bay, and created a few chances of their own.

However, they left with no points and, worse still, they wasted two fine opportunities to get on the scoresheet.

Stefan Scepovic capitalised on a misplaced Oliver Torres pass but his effort was weak and he couldn't beat the goalkeeper.

Then in the second half Pedro Leon had a chance from a good position but fired wide of Jan Oblak's post.

Worst of all, there were no away fans. It's less than 15 minutes in a car between Getafe and the Vicente Calderon, but no Getafe fans made the trip.

Possibly there were a few in among the Atletico supporters but no shirts were visible and the actual seating place for away fans was entirely empty.

Winner: Angel Correa

Angel Correa has a huge future ahead of him.

Atletico Madrid has a famous production line, which the likes of Fernando Torres, Sergio Aguero, Radamel Falcao and Diego Costa have benefited from, and Correa could be the next success story.

He came on as a substitute, thrilled the crowd and although he couldn't score, gave a good account of himself.

After the game, per Sport, Simeone said: "He's a very direct player around the box, he's very difficult to mark. He keeps growing all the time, there's no need to pressurise him. We have to choose the moments in which to play him. He did very well."

Cholo likes him, and that is a good place to be in.

Loser: Luciano Vietto

The Argentine forward, signed from Villarreal, was left on the bench.

He's barely had a sniff up front for Atletico this season, after joining them in the summer.

Videos of him struggling in pre-season showed that he has to improve his fitness to get into Diego Simeone's good books.

The coach is being cruel to be kind to the striker. When he starts making regular appearances, he will be ready, and it will show.

Simeone did this before to several players, including Koke, Jan Oblak and even Antoine Griezmann.

For now, Vietto will be wondering if he made the right choice, because players of his age do benefit from regular football.

And next up for Atletico? Vietto's old side. He would love to get on the pitch against the Yellow Submarine at the weekend.

Winner: Diego Simeone

Atletico Madrid are back on top of La Liga.

Admittedly, that might not last long, because they have played a game more than Barcelona, Real Madrid, Villarreal and Celta Vigo, all of whom could be ahead of them by close of play on Wednesday.

Atletico have 12 points, along with Barcelona, while the other sides are on 10.

However, Barcelona have a tough test at Balaidos against Celta Vigo, while Real Madrid must visit the new San Mames to play Athletic Club, where they have never won.

Whatever happens, at worst they will be three points behind the leader.

Simeone will be happy with that. The only negative result his side have had was at home against the reigning champions, Barcelona.

That game was well-fought and only settled by a moment of Lionel Messi magic. So far so good for Simeone and his men.
