Jeff Lockie Replaces Injured Vernon Adams as Oregon's Starting QB

Mike ChiariSep 19, 2015

As Vernon Adams Jr. continues to deal with a broken finger, Jeff Lockie will start at quarterback for Oregon on Saturday against Georgia State.

Aaron Fentress of CSNNW.com first reported Ducks head coach Mark Helfrich's decision, which comes after Oregon fell to Michigan State last week, and the Ducks later confirmed it.

Adams suffered the injury in a Week 1 win over his previous team, Eastern Washington. The senior signal-caller managed to throw 309 yards against the Spartans, but he also threw two interceptions and was clearly compromised by the ailment to his throwing hand.

Although Lockie was beaten out by Adams for the 2015 starting job, the junior has some experience, as he threw for 207 yards and a touchdown in relief of Marcus Mariota last season.

John Canzano of the Oregonian believes that playing Lockie and getting Adams healthy is the best possible option for the Ducks in terms of positioning themselves for a run at the College Football Playoff:

In addition to that, offensive coordinator Scott Frost is very comfortable with Lockie at the controls, per Tyson Alger of the Oregonian.

"We're always ready to play Jeff," Frost said. "I feel great about Jeff being in there if and when that happens, and we'll take it as it comes."

Oregon will be a heavy favorite against Georgia State regardless of the quarterback situation, which is why sitting Adams should be a fairly easy decision on the part of Helfrich.

There is little point in risking further injury in what should be a guaranteed win, plus Lockie will gain even more experience should the Ducks need him again.
