Caitlyn Jenner May Be Charged with Manslaughter in February Crash

Tyler ConwayAug 20, 2015

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has determined Caitlyn Jenner could be charged with vehicular manslaughter for her part in a February crash that resulted in the death of another motorist, according to a report by Maane Khatchatourian of Variety.

“The case will be submitted to the district attorney next week,” Lt. Shaun Mathers told Khatchatourian.

The sheriff's office said Jenner might be charged with a misdemeanor in the case, which could lead to a year in jail, rather than a felony. It will be up to the discretion of the district attorney's office whether to pursue the case. Det. Richard Curry told Variety it is "50-50" whether Jenner will actually be prosecuted.

In their six-month investigation, police found that Jenner was traveling at an unsafe speed for roadway conditions (but still under the speed limit) when she collided with a vehicle driven by Kimberly Howe on the Pacific Coast Highway on Feb. 7. Howe's car then went into oncoming traffic, where she hit head-on with another vehicle and died as a result of the injuries.

"My heartfelt and deepest sympathies go out to the family and loved ones, and to all of those who were involved or injured in this terrible accident," Jenner said in a statement released the day after the incident, per Steve Almasy and Holly Yan of CNN.com. "It is a devastating tragedy, and I cannot pretend to imagine what this family is going through at this time. I am praying for them. I will continue to cooperate in every way possible."

Relatives of Howe have since filed a lawsuit against Jenner, who earlier this year came out as transgender. Jenner has filed a counterclaim, saying the relatives do not deserve compensation because they were not dependents at the time of the crash.

Jenner passed a sobriety test after the crash and has cooperated with investigators.
