Tyrod Taylor Will Start at QB for Bills' 2nd Preseason Game vs. Browns

Joseph ZuckerAug 14, 2015

Tyrod Taylor received plenty of praise following the Buffalo Bills' 25-24 defeat to the Carolina Panthers on Friday night. The 26-year-old also earned himself the starting quarterback job, at least for the second week of the preseason.

Bills head coach Rex Ryan made the announcement after the game (via Around The NFL).

Taylor finished the game 5-of-8 passing for 49 yards, but what set him apart was his work on the ground. He ran for 47 yards on six carries. A large chunk of those yards came on this play in the second quarter (via the NFL):

SB Nation's Buffalo Rumblings liked what it saw from the former Virginia Tech Hokie:

On one hand, you don't want to read too much into Ryan's decision. Starting the second week of the preseason is far from a surefire indicator Taylor will have any sort of significant role to play in Buffalo's offense this year.

Then again, the Bills' QB situation is a mess. Sal Capaccio of WGR 550 in Buffalo reported this week EJ Manuel is losing ground in the race for the starting job, while the other viable option is Matt Cassel. Manuel did throw for 77 yards and a touchdown against the Panthers, but that doesn't erase his past two lackluster seasons, when his QB ratings were 81.6 and 65.8, respectively.

When Cassel and Manuel are among your choices, why not see if Taylor is for real?

If Taylor can put another solid game together, then he could put himself in pole position to be Buffalo's quarterback in 2015.
