Glory Johnson's Charges Dismissed in Case Involving Brittney Griner
A judge has dismissed charges against Glory Johnson stemming from a domestic violence case with her then-fiancee Brittney Griner, her attorney revealed Saturday.
Johnson's attorney, Brian Russo, told the Associated Press (via USA Today) that a judge in Maricopa County, Arizona, granted the motion to dismiss the charges against his client:
"Johnson and Griner were arrested on April 22 at their home in Goodyear, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix, on misdemeanor charges of assault and disorderly conduct.
Russo said the prosecutor in Goodyear considered Johnson the victim and chose not to proceed, in part, because it is difficult to treat the same person as both the aggressor and the victim. The case was moved to the Maricopa County Attorney's office, which filed a motion to dismiss before the judge granted it.
"
Johnson, a two-time WNBA All-Star as a member of the Tulsa Shock, confirmed the dismissal in an email to the AP and said that "there is no further need to discuss those events."
Per AZCentral.com, citing police reports, Griner and Johnson were "in the living room throwing things at each other" when they were arrested.
Griner accepted a plea deal in the case and was ordered to undergo 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling, at which time all charges against her will be dismissed. The WNBA suspended both Griner and Johnson for seven games after their arrest.
Griner will serve her suspension when the 2015 season starts. Johnson, whose pregnancy will keep her off the court until 2016, will serve her suspension upon her return.
