American Pharoah

American Pharoah demolished the field in his last outing, winning by eight lengths at the Arkansas Derby while still looking as though he could go up a few gears.
Since losing his first career outing, he has won four in a row and comes into Saturday's headline event as the rightful favourite.
Pharoah will be jockeyed by Victor Espinoza, who is looking to join an elite group to ride back-to-back winners in the Derby, having triumphed last year abroad California Chrome, per ESPN's Lane Gold:
Looking at Pharoah's pedigree, it is unsurprising that he is such a brilliant horse. His sire,ย Pioneerofย the Nile, finished second in the Kentucky Derby in 2009, whileย grandsire Empire Maker won the 2003 Belmont Stakes.
He also descended from 1990 Kentucky Derby champion Unbridled. Trainer Bob Baffert has won three times in the Kentucky Derby in the past, and in American Pharoah, he could well have a fourth.
Mubtaahijย ย

Something of an unknown at the Derby this year, the Dubai-basedย Mubtaahij is trained by South Africanย Mike de Kock.
He has four victories from seven career starts and won March's UAE Derby by eight lengths, a convincing enough victory for de Kock to decide to run him at Churchill Downs, per Alicia Wincze Hughes of Kentucky.com:
"I probably found the worst year ever to attempt to run in the Kentucky Derby.ย The way he won in Dubai, and I understand the jury is still out on the horses he beat, but he did it in a manner that gave one confidence that you could put the horse on the plane and be competitive. If he had just won, I wouldn't have even bothered.
"
In conversation with Bleacher Report, racing analyst Joe Kristufek gave his backing toย Mubtaahij for Saturday's race, and there is certainly value in getting behind the mystery colt:
Furthermore, Mubtaahij has some excellent pedigree. His sire, Dubawi, had a successful racing career competing at some of the UK's most high-profile races.
Dubawi also siredย Dodging Bullets, who recently won the high-profile Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, and Mubtaahij could certainly be a winner on Saturday.
Danzig Moon
The Mark Casse-trained Danzig Moon is something of an outsider at this year's Kentucky Derby, but he has some serious pedigree going way back.

His grandsire A.P. Indy won the 1992 Belmont Stakes, whileย great-damsire Northern Dancer won theย 1964 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, per Mark Inabinett of AL.com.
Danzig moon has twice been beaten by one of the favourites for this year's Kentucky Derby, Carpe Diem,ย a well-beaten fourth in the Tampa Bay Derby but a decent second in the Blue Grass Stakes.
He has been drawn in gate No. 5, a hole that has produced nine winners in the past, including California Chrome in 2014, per KentuckyDerby.com.
Danzig Moon may be an outsider, but he has plenty going for him and could be on for a potential upset.ย
