Jeff Gordon to Drive 2015 Indy 500 Pace Car, Race in Coca-Cola 600 on Same Day

The 2015 season is Jeff Gordon's last as a full-time NASCAR Sprint Cup driver, but he is poised to pull off at least one more impressive first in his career before it is all said and done.

According to NASCAR.com's Matt Humphrey, the future Hall of Famer will drive the pace car for the Indianapolis 500 on May 24 before taking part in the Sprint Cup's Coca-Cola 600 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway that same night:

Per Dustin Long of NBCSports.com, the 43-year-old legend is extremely excited about the opportunity:

Although Gordon was born in Vallejo, California, he was raised in Pittsboro, Indiana, which makes the Indianapolis Motor Speedway his home track.

Pulling "the double" is something that has been done on multiple occasions with regards to the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600. Tony Stewart, Robby Gordon and Kurt Busch are among the drivers who have run both races in the same day.

Gordon's double is much different, though, as he won't actually compete in the Indianapolis 500. That fact should make it far easier for him to be competitive in the Sprint Cup race.

There is no question that some incredible honors have been bestowed upon Gordon over the years, but ushering in the Indy 500 may very well rank near the top of that list.
