Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota's Reported Scores on Wonderlic Test Revealed

Tyler ConwayApr 14, 2015

Quarterbacks Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota have passed all the physical tests throughout the NFL draft process, establishing themselves as unquestioned front-runners for the No. 1 overall pick.

If reports prove true, it appears they've each cleared the mental barrier as well.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports reported Winston scored a 27 out of 50 on the Wonderlic at this year's NFL Scouting Combine. According to John Middlekauff of 95.7 The Game's Haberman & Middlekauff (h/t Robinson), Mariota scored a 33:

Those marks are well within the typical range of high-profile NFL quarterbacks.

Robinson cites Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and Russell Wilson among the players who have posted similar scores to Winston. Mariota's score is the same as Tom Brady's and puts him in elite company.

Howard Eskin of Fox 29 in Philadelphia and Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports weighed in on the scores Mariota and Winston posted:

Opinions vary immensely on whether the Wonderlic, a test of general intelligence, is a valuable tool. An AFC source told Robinson that teams as a whole have begun backing away from making any sweeping proclamations about the test's effectiveness:

"

[The Wonderlic] is a smaller piece now than it used to be, but it's generally helpful when it comes to some positions. It's kind of a guardrail—a score doesn't tell you the whole story about a player, but at times it can tell you if there's something you might need to look at more closely. ... For me, it becomes important if it's wild, like, way off what I'm expecting.

"

Winston, 21, is competing with Mariota to be the No. 1 pick in this month's draft. An overwhelming majority has pegged the Florida State prospect to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and odds are these Wonderlic scores will do little to help or hurt his cause.

The Bucs are likelier to be focused on the 65 touchdowns and 26-1 record he compiled in Tallahassee. Plus, anyone who saw Winston break down game film on NFL Network's Game Changers during the predraft process already had few concerns about his mental acumen from a football standpoint.

Mariota, college football's reigning Heisman Trophy winner, has also done everything right since declaring for the draft. The 21-year-old turned in a fine showing at the scouting combine and Oregon's pro day.

The Tennessee Titans own the No. 2 overall pick and will have to look long and hard at themselves before passing on Mariota if Winston winds up in Tampa Bay.

This report will merely be another feather in their caps confirming the quarterbacks as elite talents.
