Saturday Recap

Eugenie Bouchard is one of the most talented players on the WTA Tour. Her consistency is still an area where she needs to improve, though. That was on display once again today, as she came out completely flat against Tatjana Maria and couldn't recover in time to save the match.
In the first set, she had four double faults, won just one of eight points on her second serve and generated just one break chance. That's simply not good enough for a player of her caliber against a player outside the top 100 like Maria.
Matt Cronin of Tennis Reporters noted the lack of reliability isn't uncommon for rising stars:
Arash Madani of Sportsnet also discussed her struggles:
Serena Williams advanced to the third round with a straight-sets victory over Monica Niculescu. Although the scoreline would make it seem like a blowout, it was actually more competitive than that. The American just won the key points.
As always, Williams is borderline unbeatable when at her best. Her pure power gives her an advantage every time she steps on the court. So even when a player like Niculescu plays relatively well, it can get away from her as it did on Saturday.
SI Tennis passed along comments from the No. 1 women's player in the world after the match:
Fellow American John Isner advanced on the men's side. He smashed seven aces and won an eye-popping 27 of 28 points on his first serve to dispatch Andrey Rublev. He converted one break point in each set to complete the victory.
While Isner is trying to find top form to make a deep run in Miami, Rublev is a player worth monitoring moving forward. His return of serve obviously must improve against top opponents, but the 17-year-old Russian's all-around game definitely shows promise.
The Tennis Talker Chris Goldsmith is bullish on his future, as well:
Djokovic closed out the night with a three-setter against Martin Klizan. The world's No. 1 player eventually won 6-0, 5-7, 6-1. Sports Illustrated Tennis noted how the match should've been over after only two sets, with Djokovic throwing away a two-game lead:
He obviously got things back on track in the third, sweeping Klizan aside in quick order.
It's rare to see so many big names in action in one day outside of a Grand Slam event. So the fans in Miami received a treat Saturday and most of the fan favorites gave them something to cheer about. And it created some nice matchups moving forward.
The action continues on Sunday with another full slate of matches. Serena Williams, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka are some of the notable names looking to keep their hopes of capturing the Masters title alive.
