Arsenal Transfer News: Edinson Cavani Battle On, Arsene Wenger to Trim Squad

Rory MarsdenMar 20, 2015

Arsenal are set for a summer transfer battle in their bid to sign Paris Saint-Germain's Edinson Cavani, with Atletico Madrid confirming their interest in the Uruguayan striker.

Cavani is clearly unsettled in the French capital, according to Sky Sports, and looks likely to depart the French champions come the end of the season.

Arsenal are one club among many who have been linked with a move for the 28-year-old, who switched from Napoli to PSG for €64.5 million (£47 million) in 2013.

But Atletico have now firmly stated they are looking to sign Cavani in the summer, with coach Oscar Ortega admitting as much to Mundo Deportivo (h/t Ben Jefferson of the Express): "An interest in Cavani? Yes, there is. As long as there's a chance, we will see what he can offer us. But it depends on his interest in us too."

Cavani's compatriot and former Atleti player Diego Forlan recently backed a move for his former international teammate to the Vicente Calderon, per beIN Sports USA:

But the Gunners are eager to see Cavani move to the Emirates. He is a fine finisher and would add a more clinical edge to Arsene Wenger's striking unit, which currently includes Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck.

Arsenal look set for another top-four finish in the Premier League this season but are unlikely to mount a significant title challenge. The addition of Cavani could improve their title prospects next term.

Wenger will look to keep most of his current squad intact over the summer months, although he has conceded that there will be some changes.

Arsenal are still on for a trophy come the season's end—they are still in the FA Cup—and Wenger is focused on the closing weeks of the term, but changes will be made in the summer, per Joe Short of the Express:

"

Look we are not in a transfer period. We have to continue just to focus. Ninety-five per cent of the players will still be here next season. And what is important is the attitude of this 95 per cent of the players and how much we improve, how much we push on now until the end of the season. We are in the semi-final of the FA Cup, we are in a strong fight in the Premier League.

"

Mikel Arteta is set to be offloaded by Arsenal, with his contract expiring at the end of the season, and Wenger will surely look to add an improved defensive midfielder to the side in his place, per B/R UK's James McNicholas:

A truly combative holding midfielder could improve Arsenal hugely and potentially turn them into a title-winning team once more.

With Cavani potentially out of reach, the Gunners could still do with an added striker, but Wenger clearly has faith in his current squad overall.
