Triple H Needs to Gain Upper Hand Against Sting Before WWE WrestleMania 31
Before the WWE reaches WrestleMania 31, Triple H must get the upper hand against Sting at least once on route to the biggest pay-per-view of the year.
Thus far, Sting has made Triple H look like a fool at every possible opportunity.
Since making his debut with the WWE, Sting has been on a mission to cause chaos for Triple H and The Authority. His initial debut came at the 2014 edition of Survivor Series, when Sting helped Dolph Ziggler and his teammates beat The Authority to take Triple H and Stephanie McMahon out of power.
Triple H returned to the company just a few weeks later, but Sting wasn’t done thwarting The Authority’s game plan. On the go-home episode of Raw before the Royal Rumble, Sting appeared and gave John Cena the distraction needed to get the jobs of Ziggler, Ryback and Erick Rowan back following an unfair firing.
Sting gaining the upper hand the first two times the men were involved in a segment worked to perfection, but the key to any feud is making both men look strong. Instead of giving Triple H the advantage the next time he had any interaction with Sting, The Icon used mind games to scare Triple H during the build to Fastlane, and he used his bat to beat down his foe at the PPV.
It is clear that Triple H is doing most of his damage with a microphone. From talking about how he was at the forefront of taking down WCW to threatening to take away his livelihood, Triple H has been great on the mic. Now he needs to get the physical advantage on Sting.
Few storyline flaws can kill an angle quicker than a lopsided build. Whether it was Batista dominating Alberto Del Rio on the road to WrestleMania 30 or The Undertaker constantly getting the advantage over Brock Lesnar last year, fans have a hard time investing their time and interest in a feud that is clearly one-sided.
Most wrestling fans understand Sting will win the WrestleMania match, but there is a large majority of the WWE Universe that would be willing to suspend disbelief if the proper storyline was told. If Triple H gets the upper hand before the big PPV and beats Sting down (maybe with the help of The Authority), the crowd would be much more interested to see if Triple H can steal a win on the biggest stage of them all.
With Vince McMahon still the leader of the creative team, it’s also a matter of time before the wrestler representing the WWE against Sting and the WCW gets the upper hand just to make his company look even stronger. The tense relationship between the company and WCW’s former stars has been well-documented for years, and it’s just a matter of time before the WWE feeds into that perception with an on-screen segment.
It is imperative to the success of this storyline and the subsequent WrestleMania 31 match that Triple H gets the upper hand at least once to sell the fans on the fact the he could pull out the surprise victory against Sting.
The build thus far has been incredible considering this is not the dream match most had in mind for Sting—fighting The Undertaker is the ultimate prize fight. How the company handles the next month of programming will be key to how much the fans enjoy the resulting battle.
Giving Triple H the upper hand against Sting before WrestleMania would add even more intrigue to the eventual match.
