Mets: 5 Hyped Prospects to Watch in Spring Training

Shale BriskinFeb 6, 2015

Spring training is a few weeks away, and it will be a time where top prospects can show their potential in front of fans, major league players and coaches.

Some prospects, of course, will be more developed than others, but the ones who are more developed will likely be aiming to make the Opening Day roster out of spring training.

The New York Mets, like all other teams, have some really good young talent that could potentially crack the major leagues this season. And there's also younger talent that could be major league-ready in a few years. Here are five hyped Mets prospects to watch in spring training.

SP Noah Syndergaard

1 of 5

Arguably the top prospect in the Mets' system, Noah Syndergaard should now be more than ready to make his major league debut sometime this season.

With Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Zack Wheeler, Jon Niese and Bartolo Colon already in the Mets' starting rotation, Syndergaard will probably have to pitch extremely well to make the rotation out of spring training.

Will Syndergaard start the year with the Mets, or will he begin the season once again with Triple-A Las Vegas? Syndergaard will certainly be one of the most exciting Mets players to focus on in spring training.

SP Steven Matz

2 of 5

Another pitching prospect to keep track of in spring training is Steven Matz. The southpaw is probably a couple of seasons away from being major league-ready, but regardless, it will still be exciting to watch his outings this spring.

Will Matz pitch well enough to start the year in Triple-A? Could he become a big trade chip that the Mets could use to make an upgrade of some sort? This is a big year for Matz's development, and hopefully, it will go very well for him.

CF Brandon Nimmo

3 of 5

Brandon Nimmo is one of the top offensive prospects, if not the top offensive prospect, in the Mets' organization. It's still a few more years until we see him in a Mets uniform, but many fans will certainly want to see him at the plate in spring training.

Will Nimmo develop more power this year? Can he continue to play as well as he did last year, when he had a .394 OBP and drew 86 walks while splitting the season between Single-A St. Lucie and Double-A Binghamton?

Those are the burning questions for Nimmo this spring, and with all the different outfielders the Mets have had for the past 20 years, there is certainly hope that Nimmo will one day be able to establish some long-term stability in the outfield.

C Kevin Plawecki

4 of 5

While the Mets already have a young catcher in Travis d'Arnaud, they have another very good catching prospect in the minor leagues by the name of Kevin Plawecki.

Plawecki probably needs another season or two before being major league-ready, but it will be interesting to see how well he does in spring training in comparison to d'Arnaud just to see where he is at.

The Mets eventually may be forced to trade Plawecki if they intend on staying with d'Arnaud as their catcher of the future. But could Plawecki hit well enough to eventually start over d'Arnaud? Time certainly will tell.

SS Amed Rosario

5 of 5

One of the younger prospects who could get a chance to shine in spring training is shortstop Amed Rosario.

The 19-year-old Rosario has good potential, and with shortstop being a big weakness for the Mets since the departure of Jose Reyes following the 2011 season, Rosario could one day restore stability at the position.

It will be fascinating to see how many chances Rosario will have in spring training to play with major leaguers and more developed prospects before he eventually gets reassigned to minor league camp. Good spring training stats could certainly help Rosario rise through the minor league ranks a bit quicker.
