Manchester United 2 - Chelsea 2* (Pens. 1-4) (Community Shield, August 9, 2009) United took 10th minute lead against the Blues as Luis Nani received the ball in an inside-left position, shifted the ball onto his right, and fired a low shot into Cech’s far post. The Blues equalised in the 52nd minute when Ben Foster could only palm a cross into Riccardo Carvalho’s direction and the centre-half converted from 6-yards. The comeback was complete in controversial circumstances in the 71st minute, Ballack body-checked Evra near the Pensioners box and from the resulting clearance Drogba set up Frank Lampard to blast a shot past a weak-wristed Foster. In injury time United equalised with their own controversial goal, Giggs played an offside Wayne Rooney through on goal and the number ten stroked the ball into the far corner. Giggs and Evra (terrible effort) missed in the shootout, while Chelsea scored four from four.


Yeovil 2 - Tranmere 0 (League Two, August 8, 2009) John Barnes’ career as Tranmere boss got off to a disappointing start as Dean Bowditch opened the scoring before Gavin Tomlin added a second from the penalty spot.


Bochum 3 - Monchengladbach 3 (Bundesliga, August 9, 2009) Gladbach began the new Bundesliga season in style at Bochum, Juan Arango toe-poking the visitors into a 19th minute lead before Israeli international Roberto Colautti added in the 26th minute. Roel Brouwers completed a completed one-sided first half by heading in Gladbach’s third minutes before the break. Bochum forward Mimoun Azaouagh started the fightback early in the second half with a curler into the top corner. Azaouagh then grabbed a stunning second, hitting a first-time strike in the top corner from 25-yards out. And Stanislav Sestak completed the brilliant Bochum comeback by angling a header in off the far post.


FC Twente 1 - PSV 1 (Eredivisie, August 9, 2009) Douglas bundled the ball over the PSV line after 20 minutes. But the lead lasted just six minutes before Balazs Dzsudzsak brought the visitors level.


Zenit St. Petersburg 0 - Tomsk 2 (Russian Premier League, August 9, 2009) Second half goals from George Jokic and Aleksandr Kharitonov handed Tomsk the surprise away win.

Samara 1 - Lokomotiv Moscow 3 (Russian Premier League, August 9, 2009) A Roman Shishkin og and goals from Dmitri Sychev and Alan Gatagov earned Lokomotiv the points.


Anderlecht 3 - Cercle Brugge 2 (Jupiler League, August 8, 2009) Matias Suarez put Anderlecht ahead after 12 minutes, only for Anthony Portier to level before the half hour. An own goal from Frederik Boi restored the home side’s lead just before the break, and Mbark Boussoufa made it 3-1 shortly after the hour. Thomas Buffel pulled one back for the visitors in the 73rd minute, but Anderlecht held on to their lead to jump to first place.

Newcastle Jets 3 - Wellington Phoenix 2 (A-League, August 9, 2009) A double from Jason Hoffman put Newcastle 2-up inside 25 minutes, But the Phoenix muscled their way back into the match with defender Ben Sigmund and striker Chris Greenache scoring goals to make it 2-2 at halftime. The Jets weren’t to be denied victory though, as substitutes Sean Rooney and Jason Naidovski combined to grab the winner six minutes from time.
