Jon Lester Calmly Responds to Angry Red Sox Fans over Twitter After Joining Cubs

Jon Lester signed with the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night, marking the first of many big moves to come as MLB teams work through the winter meetings.

The decision came as a blow to Boston Red Sox fans, who believed Lester would sign with his former team after going on what was believed to be a de facto loan to the Oakland A’s in July.

After signing with Chicago, Lester took to Twitter to bid Boston fans farewell and thank them for their support over the years:

His gesture went about as well as you’d imagine, with angry fans responding with the typical sentiments of betrayal. The only surprising part was Lester’s response to the criticism—or rather, that he responded at all.

Instead of tweeting goodbye and throwing his phone out of a moving vehicle as he should have, Lester took the time to write measured, individual responses to the many fans reacting to his signing.
