Ravi Bopara made 51 for the tourists and Joe Root contributed 42, but there was little else to cheer for the visitors.

First ODI centurion Moeen Ali was bowled by Tillakaratne Dilshan for just two, and Ian Bell and under-fire captain Alastair Cook followed him back to the pavilion inside 10 overs.

England reached 100 in the 24th over, but Eoin Morgan had also departed by then, and wickets continued to tumble. Bopara was the eighth man out after a 69-ball innings that featured just one boundary.

Spinner Ajantha Mendis finished with 3-33, but England’s slow bowlers failed to have any sort of impact in the hosts’ reply.

After Kusal Perera was removed by Steve Finn for nine, Ali did dismiss Dilshan for 26, but the familiar faces of Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara soon stopped any talk of a close finish.

The duo, who have a combined 36 ODI centuries to their name, shared an unbroken 149-run partnership in 26.4 overs. Both hit eight boundaries, with Sangakkara finishing on 67 and Jayawardene 77 not out.

Cook said in the post-match presentation that he was hopeful his side can recover, as reported by Cricinfo:

"

We thought it was a good toss to win but I'm not sure that was the right choice. Sri Lanka totally outplayed us in all departments today. We assessed the pitch wrong but it's how you play and Sri Lanka put us under pressure with the ball. Then you end up having to try stuff in the field and keep players up and that gives class players the chance to hit boundaries.

We had a few big shots that just evaded fielders but they played so well. It's been a tough few days, we've had no practise time with the rain, it'll be good to get out of Colombo and have afresh start. We've got some good players and we can bounce back.

"

Dear Alastair, if you care about England's chances this winter, pls resign and just concentrate on Test cricket...#getHalesin

The teams now travel to Hambantota for the third match of the series, a day-night affair on Wednesday.
