Race to Dubai 2014 Winner: Rory McIlroy Tops Rankings, Latest Prize Money Info
It's pretty safe to say that 2014 was the year of Rory McIlroy.ย
As if wins at the PGA Championship, British Open and the Ryder Cup weren't enoughโand let's not forget about being voted as the PGA Tour player of the yearย and also winning ย the PGA Tour money titleโMcIlroy finished as the European No. 1 on Sunday for the second time in three years, per Sky Sports News on Twitter:
The Race to Dubai title guarantees McIlroy a $1.25 million share of the $5 million bonus pool that is split between the top 15 players.ย
Brooks Koepka's victory at the Turkish Airlines Open on Sunday ensured that McIlroy finished as the top European player this season. Coming into the event, onlyย Jamie Donaldson, Sergio Garcia and Marcel Siem had a chance to catch McIlroy on the money list, though they needed to win both at theย Turkish Airlines Open and the DP World Tour Championship to accomplish the feat.ย
So comfortable was McIlroy's lead in the standings that he wasn't even competing at the Turkish Airlines Open.
It won't be easy for McIlroy to top his epic 2014 season, but the 25-year-old will be expected to once again reign above the golf world. McIlroy is the biggest star the game has seen since the fall from grace of Tiger Woods, and the (perhaps unfair) expectation going forward will be that his success in 2014 is the norm, not the exception.
No pressure or anything, McIlroy. Of course, if his 2014 season was any indication, McIlroy isn't exactly succumbing to any pressure these days.
