Fantasy Baseball Week 17 Pickups

Michael SholtyContributor IJuly 26, 2009

At this point in the season, the waiver wire is depleted and you may be trying to fill in a spot because of an injured guy! Here are some really good pickups for you for Week 17.

Jonny Gomes OF CIN—This guy has quietly been hitting quite a few homers. Saturday was probably the last quiet homer he will hit this season because people are starting to take notice of Jonny Gomes.

In recent past, when this guy has the AB needed, he has produced. He is playing almost full time now, and he's putting up some nice numbers that any team could enjoy (Last 2 months: 8 HR, 18 RBI, 16 R, 99 AB). He might not carry your team, but right now you are probably looking to fill in a hole more than get someone to carry you to fantasy greatness.

If so, Gomes is your guy.

Stolen Bases

Everth Cabrera 2B SD—his guy plays at a semi-scarce 2B position, and he won't help you in batting average, but if you are looking for some runs and stolen bases then pick him up. The last two weeks he's stolen 6 bases and looks to be running almost every time he gets on base.

Scott Podsednik OF CHW—Chances are if you are in a deep league this guy has been picked up, but if not hurry to your free agent list and get him! He's revitalized his career in Chicago this year and is hitting like a mad man! Don't expect .300 out of him going today forward but .280 with 15 SB for the rest of the year is definitely achievable for the speedy lead-off man.

Doug Davis SP ARI—The only reason this guy is under-owned is because of his 5-10 record. His ERA and WHIP have been of a 10 win pitcher and it's crazy how Arizona can't score any runs for him when he goes out to pitch. There are rumors floating around that Davis may be traded to a contender and if that happens, look for him to win a lot of games for you going forward.

Tim Stauffer SP SDP—If you want to grab a guy who will make your league-mates laugh right now and smack their heads later on, grab Tim Stauffer. The Cincinnati Reds have been pretty miserable lately and Stauffer has three two and a half starts under his belt now in the MLB and he has impressed. Don't let his most recent one inning outting fool was raining in Washington and it was hard for him to find his control because of that. I can see 6 IP 4H 2BB 5K and a big fat W against the Reds later on this week so if you are looking for something like that, grab Mr. Stauffer off the free agent list and give him a try.
