Bayern Munich Transfer News and Rumours Tracker: Week of September 22

Stefan BienkowskiSep 21, 2014

Bayern Munich continued their troubling start to the new season at the weekend with an unexpected 0-0 draw with recently manager-less Hamburg on Saturday afternoon.

Although Pep Guardiola's team ultimately still managed to pull a point away from their title rivals Borussia Dortmund, who themselves lost to Mainz later that day, fans of the Bavarian club will begin to worry about their form.

Nonetheless, this hasn't stopped the Bundesliga champions from appearing in rumour mills across the continent as players, coaches and even back-room staff speak out over a manner of issues.

Here are all the transfer news and rumours regarding Bayern this week.

Manchester United Insistent on Bayern Stars

1 of 3

A new rupture in the friendship between Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal and Guardiola has erupted over the apparent attempts from the Dutch coach to sign some of Bayern's star players over the summer transfer window.

As reported by the Independent on September 21, Guardiola stated that Man United tried to sign Arjen Robben, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Thomas Muller but, as stated by the coach, “Did not have the money to make these transfers happen."

“What he said is not so interesting. I think every player I have contacted wants to play for Manchester United,” was the response from Van Gaal, yet it offered very little insight into just how close the trio came to moving to the Premier League.

Bayern May Need Another Striker in January

2 of 3

Although no news or rumours have surfaced as of yet, there will undoubtedly be a strong push from the rumour mill from now until January with regard to the current shortage of attacking options at Bayern this season.

One of the most notable parts of the club's disappointing draw with Hamburg was Robert Lewandowski's demotion to the bench in favour of 35-year-old Claudio Pizarro. The Polish striker has only scored one goal in five competitive games since joining Munich, and it would seem as though the Catalan coach is beginning to lose patience.

Although both strikers have things covered at this moment in time, it would only take a minor injury to either forward to really send the club into panic. And possibly stick their neck out and bring in another goalscorer.

Mesut Ozil Calling It Quits at the Emirates

3 of 3

Although it may seem a little far-fetched now, following his opening goal against Aston Villa over the weekend, Arsenal's star midfielder Mesut Ozil was recently linked with a move to Bayern.

As reported in the English media, such as The Guardian in its rumour mill on September 15, it was suggested that the German World Cup star could favour a return to his home country in an effort to regalvanize his career.

As Barry Glendenning writes, "Elsewhere in Germany, Bayern Munich are hoping to lure Arsenal’s record signing, the occasionally maligned midfielder Mesut Ozil back to his homeland in January, with a price-tag of €40m being mentioned in conjunction with any mooted move."

Although the move may seem unlikely now, it is undoubtedly interesting to note the link between Bayern and the Arsenal player.
