Words From The Heart: Why I Love The Loveable Losers

The Cubs cause a lot of pain. Unless you're a true Cubs fan, you have no idea. 101 years is a long time to wait for a championship.

A lot of people ask me, "Why do you invest so much into a team that produces so little?" That is a great question. I finally sat down to think of why.

Here are the reasons:

Because we play two.

Because we had Ernie, Ronny, Billy, Fergie, and Phil all on one team.

Because we experienced the magical summer of 1969.

Because we call 1969 magical even though we choked in August.

Because we experienced the 1998 home run chase.

Because we had the infamous called shot at OUR park.

Because our hall of fame players go on and manage our affiliate teams.

Because we love the windy city.

Because only in Wrigleyville do we celebrate a win like we won the world series.

Because our field is in a town named after our field.

Because we watch games from rooftops.

Because we have very little ads in our ball park.

Because we have a ball park and not a stadium.

Because we had Jack Brickhouse and Harry Carry.

Because we make the visiting team take a long walk from the club house to the dugout.

Because we give the visitors a wooden bench in their dugout and our players get a padded one.

Because we got the bleacher bums.

Because our park is a national landmark.

Because we have no jumbotron, an original scoreboard, and ivy.

Because we didn't have night games until the end of 1988.

Because we play more afternoon games then night games.

Because we travel with our team.

Because one minute we will trash our team like there is no tomorrow and the next day we will praise the same person we were criticizing.

Because little boys and grown men will stand outside of left field with their gloves all game waiting for a ball.

Because we have Big Z and Kid K.

Because we will cheer for them no matter if they are 10 games ahead or 15 games back.

Because we bleed Cubbie blue.

Because we got Eddie Vedder.

Because of Steve Goodman.

Because we sing Go Cubs Go after every win.

Because we will fight in the cross-town series even though neither team will win a world series in the near future.

Because we got Sammy for nothing.

Because we signed Aramis Ramirez for absolutely nothing.

Because we have Lou Pinella.
