Matchups to Watch and Predictions

Malek Jaziri [1] (TUN) vs. Marco Chiudinelli (SUI)

Kamran Jebreili/Associated Press

Tunisian player Malek Jaziri is currently ranked No. 89 in the world and is the No. 1 seed in the qualifying tournament. He faced up-and-coming American and former Ohio State Buckeye Chase Buchanan on Tuesday in the final match on Court 17.

Buchanan fought his way to a third set, but Jaziri won the match 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.

In Round 2, Jaziri will face Switzerland's Chiudinelli, who won his match against Sergei Bubka in two sets Tuesday. Chiudinelli made it to Round 3 of the tournament in both 2006 and 2009.

Prediction: Look for the No. 1 seed to stay dominant; Jaziri should win this match.

Oscar Hernandez (ESP) vs. Guido Andreozzi (ARG)

One of the massive upsets of Round 1 occurred when Oscar Hernandez beat No. 2 seed Go Soeda of Japan in straight sets.

The semi-retired Hernandez, who retired from the tour in 2011 but entered the draw using a protected ranking, lost in the first round of the qualifying events for the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon this year. This is the first time he has made it past Round 1 of the U.S. Open in singles, though he played five previous times.

Prediction: If Hernandez can beat Soeda, he can beat anyone. Expect him to defeat Andreozzi handily.

Sesil Karatantcheva (KAZ) vs. Melanie Oudin (USA) [26]

Pablo Martinez Monsivais/Associated Press

Melanie Oudin is the No. 26 seed in the qualifying tournament and had a Cinderella run in 2009 as a U.S. Open quarterfinalist. She will face off against Sesil Karatantcheva in her first-round matchup on Wednesday. As Randy Walker noted, Karatantcheva is also a former quarterfinalist, making this matchup particularly intriguing.

Oudin, thought to be the next big thing in women's tennis before her disappointing exit in 2009, could have something of a resurgence with a win Wednesday. If she moves on, look for her to face Australia's Ashleigh Barty in the final round of the qualifying tournament.

Prediction: Both women have made it past Round 1 before, but the higher-seeded Oudin, who is ranked 135 in WTA world singles, has the edge.
