Mo'ne Davis Throws Complete-Game Shutout at Little League World Series

Adam WellsAug 15, 2014

Making her first start in the 2014 Little League World Series, Mo'ne Davis more than lived up to the hype for the team from Philadelphia with a complete-game, two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts in a 4-0 victory over South Nashville, Tennessee. MLB's official Twitter account had the news:ย

Davis became the story of the event before her first start, making an appearance on theย Today show and having countless articles written about her. Pressure was mounting on her leading up to Friday's game, and she overcame it in spectacular fashion.ย

The 13-year-old right-hander has brought positive attention to the Little League World Series and her team. She is carrying the torch for girls in America who want to play baseball, telling Kristen Dahlgren onย Todayย to not "let anyone stop you from doing what you like."

Not only is Davis dominating, but she's captivating everyone. All you have to do is look on Twitter to see the outpouring of love for her.ย

Houston Astros outfielder Dexter Fowler gave Davis props after the game was over:ย

Staying in Davis' home state, Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder and reigning National League MVP Andrew McCutchen gave the pitcher a personal shout-out as he was watching the game:

ESPN's Keith Law, noting the inherent gender stereotypes that exist in sports, noted that Davis' future in baseball could be impeded by forces outside her control:

Let's just hope that doesn't turn out to be the case, because Davis has people talking about the Little League World Series in ways that they otherwise wouldn't be.

Davis' Philadelphia team will play again on Sunday at 7 p.m. After throwing just 70 pitches,ย she is eligible to pitch again on Tuesday if the team needs her to take the mound in a must-win situation.ย

Whatever happens this weekend, we are practically guaranteed at least one more pitching performance from Davis. It will be fascinating to watch, and we know she won't be fazed by the big stage after dominating on Friday.ย
