More Athletes Who Need to Stop Hanging with Justin Bieber
Hey, Justin Bieber is an international pop star, and international pop stars often rub elbows with other celebrities.
So what's the big deal if a few star athletes are seen living out the fantasy of 10-year-old girls, or "Beliebers" as they're known?
Before the Biebs' prepubescent stardom began to spiral into disturbing man-notoriety, there was just something weird about the juxtaposition of a transcendent sports icon like Michael Jordan with a teenager who (use to) consistently pack arenas with screaming throngs of preteens and their chaperones.
I mean, we all get why Bieber wants to hobnob with a sports stars like Kevin Durant and Tyson Chandler, but what's in it for them?
Now that Bieber is making headlines due to the predictable personal mayhem that almost always follows preteen superfame, the fact that star athletes keep finding themselves in the entourage of the blossoming dirt bag has no explanation.
Here are even more athletes who really need to stop hanging out with Justin Bieber.
LPGA player Michelle Wie looks like an absolute giant standing next to the likes of Canadian plague Justin Bieber and his mentor, Usher. Also pictured is actor Nadji Jeter—he’s the one you don’t recognize.
Decked out in the finest hoodie money can buy, Justin Bieber is pictured with skateboarder Rob Dyrdek (left) and singer B.o.B. at the Xbox 360 launch of Halo in September 2010. The three were all smiles while playing video games together during the event.
Justin Bieber posted this photo with Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony to Instagram in May 2014. Said The Biebs, “Hoopin with the boyz @carmeloanthony left his jump shot at home, I left my height.”
Ya hear that, Knicks fans? The cornerstone of your franchise is boyz with Justin Bieber. That has to inspire confidence.
Justin Bieber, Canada’s most irritating export, participated in a training session with FC Barcelona in April 2011. Here he is pictured pointing at Bojan Krkic, who looks happier to see the Biebs than vice versa. How embarrassing.
Nashville Predators center Mike Fisher chatted up Justin Bieber and his crew at the 40th Annual American Music Awards back in November 2012.
Former NFL defensive end Jay Williams disappointed the world recently when he tweeted this photo of him and Justin Bieber traveling somewhere together on a private plane.
Said Williams, “Spending the last 2 hours with @justinbieber was truly inspiring. He is changing lives. #BELIEVE”
Justin Bieber poses for a photo with Dallas Mavericks big man Dirk Nowitzki at the ESPY Awards in July 2011. The Biebs is just under nipple height standing next to Dirk.
Back in April 2012 PGA pro Bubba Watson tweeted some photos of him golfing with Canada’s own Justin Bieber, he of the terrible music and even more terrible tattoos. According to Watson, who may or may not have been lying, after he won the Masters, the only person he talked to on the phone that night was the Biebs.
For some reason he and Selena Gomez called to congratulate Watson. And for some reason he had Watson’s number. And for some reason that’s the only call Watson took on the biggest day of his professional career.
Canadian singer Justin Bieber poses for a picture with Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox after throwing out the ceremonial first pitch during a game against the Kansas City Royals in May 2010.
You know Buehrle had to have requested this. Let’s just hope he has daughters or something and that photo isn’t in an 8x10 frame on his nightstand.
NASCAR driver Danica Patrick presented the award for Best Team with Justin Bieber at the ESPY Awards in July 2011. Just when you thought Patrick couldn’t disappoint us anymore with her bottom-10 finishes, she pulls a stunt like this.
This photo of American Olympic snowboarder Shaun White and Justin Bieber has been floating around for quite a while; unfortunately, I was unable to find the story and/or date behind it. Given the max hair that White is sporting, this is probably circa 2011.
Iman Shumpert and John Wall
For some reason Justin Bieber, who is almost always dressed like a fool, hit up a runway show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in September 2013. It’s hard to tell if he was there with Wizards star John Wall and Knicks shooting guard Iman Shumpert or just seated next to them by chance.
But it definitely looks like they’re together—Wall’s knee is almost touching that of the Biebs, which suggests some level of comfort.
Justin Bieber, before he was ever arrested, participated in a training session with FC Barcelona in April 2011. Here he is throwing up deuces with Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara, who has a strangely placid smile.
Scott Hartnell and Kimmo Timonen
Flyers fans were dealt an unfortunate blow back in 2010 when defenseman Kimmo Timonen and Scott Hartnell were photographed presenting Justin Bieber, and his ridiculous haircut, his very own Philadelphia jersey. Yankees fans also took a hit.
These days Justin Bieber fancies himself a bit of a skateboarder. Presumably, he’s encouraged in this dangerous hobby by his good friend Ryan Sheckler, who is obviously a skateboarder. A big thanks for Sheckler for that.
Justin Bieber fancies himself a Maple Leafs fan, although he’s been spotted supporting the colors of the Winnipeg Jets, Philadelphia Flyers and Los Angeles Kings, among others, at one point or another over the years. Despite having no real allegiance to anything or anyone, the Biebs at least tried to fake it for Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf at the Air Canada Centre in December 2011.
He participated in a training session with the team as part of “MuchMusic Presents: Justin Bieber Home For The Holidays.” Well, that's one way to ruin Christmas.
Justin Bieber has an inexplicably successful recording career that keeps him busy, but he also has a part-time gig serving as boxer Floyd Mayweather’s arm candy on fight nights. The Biebs was accompanied by WWE wrestler Triple H, his wife Stephanie McMahon and rapper 50 Cent at Mayweather’s match against Miguel Cotto in May 2012.
Others may come and go from Money’s ring walk, but the Biebs is his only constant. Which is good because Triple H is way better than this kind of crap.
American Olympic swimmer Missy Franklin was all about the Biebs back in 2012—and may very well still be all about the Biebs to this day. In August, Franklin reportedly “flipped out” over a video Justin Bieber, athletic supporter, recorded and sent to her, according to US Weekly.
The following December USA Today reported that a care package she received from the pop singer almost ruined her amateur status. That kid is always ruining lives. After months of interwebs hubbub, Franklin finally got to meet the Biebs in January 2013.
Their bromance seems to have cooled off in recent years, but for a while there, future Hall of Fame NBA big man Shaquille O’Neal and compact Canadian pop star Justin Bieber were best of buds. The awkwardly sized pair even filmed an episode of Shaq’s defunct ABC reality show Shaq Vs.
In early July, Browns rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel disappointed everyone yet again when photos of him partying with Justin Bieber and his long-term bro Floyd Mayweather in Beverly Hills made their way to the interwebs. It was the Biebs that broke the camel’s back.
Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Despite his many athletic friends and acquaintances, Justin Bieber’s No. 1 is, was and always will be boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. Although Mayweather was featured in my previous list, his recent assertion that people who are surprised by their oddly close friendship were guilty of racial profiling definitely warranted a mention here.
Obviously, there is no breaking these two kids up, but a little break couldn’t hurt.
