Keylor Navas Can End Real Madrid Goalkeeping Dilemma

Keylor Navas looks set to sign for Real Madrid, and he will finally end the goalkeeping dilemma that has plagued the club since Jose Mourinho's days. 

Carlos Carpio of Spanish newspaper Marca reports that, pending official confirmation, the Levante goalkeeper will be switching to the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Costa Rican goalkeeper was a standout at the World Cup, his heroics confirming what La Liga watchers already knew to be true: He is a true star.

The report in Marca says that Madrid are paying the €10 million buyout clause, which sees €8 million go to the club and €2 million to the player himself.

The Madrid-based paper says that Navas' signing will be announced when the club has secured a buyer for Diego Lopez.

Napoli and Monaco are the leading contenders for the Galician.

Madrid have had trouble with the goalkeeping position for some time.

Back in December 2012, Mourinho dropped Iker Casillas for Antonio Adan, which seemed a bizarre move.

Adan was clearly not cut out to be the first-choice goalkeeper for Real Madrid. 

In the January transfer window, Mourinho purchased Diego Lopez from Sevilla and installed him in the team ahead of Casillas and Adan.

When Carlo Ancelotti joined last summer, with Mourinho heading to his former side Chelsea, everybody wondered if he would restore Madrid's favourite son, Casillas, back to his position.

Ancelotti sat on the fence and decided to try and keep both Lopez and Casillas happy.

He picked the former to play in La Liga and the latter for cup competitions.

On the face of it, this worked quite well. Lopez played well enough to mostly keep critics at bay, and Madrid succeeded in the competitions Casillas played in.

However, Casillas made an error in the Champions League final that could have seen Madrid punished.

As it was, his team-mates absolved him of guilt by beating Atletico Madrid 4-1.

However, Spain weren't quite so lucky.

La Roja suffered when Casillas blundered several times during the World Cup and were dumped out in the group stage.

Now, it seems that Navas will come in and be first choice for Ancelotti, which would be a good move.

The Costa Rican has long deserved a shot at a higher level than Levante, and he will now get his chance.

Bayern Munich had shown interest, but being the back-up to Manuel Neuer would not have been a fitting fate for Navas.

One attribute of his which needs to be tested is his concentration.

Navas is used to being under siege, deflecting away shot after shot, cross after cross, chance after chance.

He will have much less work to do at Real Madrid, but it means he must be alert and prepared to do it when the time comes.

Mistakes will be focused on far more in a Los Blancos shirt than his Levante kit. At Levante, he could make amends with several brilliant saves if he made a rare error.

For Real Madrid, he may only face one shot in a particular game, but he absolutely has to keep it out.

Many supporters at the Bernabeu love Casillas. If Navas has a couple of shaky games, then you can be sure they'll be chanting for the veteran stopper to return.
