When it comes to the Fourth of July and sports, there really is nothing more entertaining than watching grown men and women gorge their faces with hot dogs.

The 98th edition of the contest will once again take place on Coney Island. The gluttonous competition is set to show on ESPN2 where the entire country can watch the major league eaters compete.

This year's edition promises to be just as entertaining as in years past with Joey "Jaws" Chestnut once again looking to hit the elusive mark of 70 wieners. On the women's side, Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas hopes to eclipse her own personal record of 45 hot dogs Friday.

Most Hot Dogs and Buns Eaten By a Man in 10 Minutes

One of the most well-known competitive eaters in the world is none other than Chestnut. The 30-year-old from Vallejo, California has held the record since 2009 when he swallowed an entire 68 hot dogs and repeated the feat in 2012.

During the 2013 competition, he outdid himself and choked down a whopping 69 dogs to capture his seventh straight title. For comparisons sake, second place was Matthew Stonie with just 51 frankfurters.

After setting the record for two years straight, Chestnut will be looking to surpass it again Friday. The recordholder spoke about what it's like leading up to the competition, per Walter Scott of Parade.com:

It’s my favorite contest of the year and I put quite a bit of work into it. I started six weeks out. I get into a cycle where I’ll do a practice contest, then I’ll fast for about three days. No solid food, just lots of liquids. So I pretty much do a cleanse after every practice and go into my next practice empty, and I push a little bit harder.

There's also an extra incentive if he gets past the 69-dog mark. According to his official Twitter account, Jaws will get the chance to drive the Aric Almirola's Nathan's sponsored car:

Given the fact that he's already overtaken his own mark multiple times, Chestnut might just set yet another record on the Fourth of July.

Most Hot Dogs and Buns Eaten By a Woman in 10 Minutes

  • 45: Sonya Thomas in 2012

Though the number is considerably smaller for the women's competition, Thomas is an idol in her sport.

The Black Widow is still active in the competition and, like Chestnut, is looking to surpass her own record. Just a year after downing 45 franks in the 2012 event, Thomas fell well short of that mark and narrowly edged out Juliet Lee with 36.75 hot dogs and buns.

While Thomas still holds the record, both Lee and another competitor in Miki Sudo also pose a threat to the Black Widow. The odds heading in have Thomas narrowly ahead of Sudo, per EatFeats:

As for Sudo, she threw down the gauntlet earlier this year by defeating Chestnut head-to-head in the RibMania competition. She also seems pretty sure of the fact that she'll knock Thomas off her throne, as she notes on her Twitter account:

The patriotic shades were a nice touch, especially with the contest coming on the Fourth of July.

Will she accomplish the feat of finally taking down the Black Widow? Or might Lee finally step up and clinch her first women's title Friday?

A new reign might begin Friday with Sudo looking to finally overtake Thomas. Regardless of who walks away with the title, viewers will be in for a treat with the ladies duking it out for the belt.
