On a night of big returns, AJ Lee had the biggest. Not only did she step back into a WWE ring on the June 30 edition of Raw, but she also won a title in the process.
First came the initial shock of seeing AJ on WWE programming again:
She had been gone since she lost the Divas title to Paige the night after retaining it at WrestleMania 30:
After taking in the moment for a little bit, she cut a promo praising Paige but at the same time tried to bait her into defending the Divas Championship. After Paige said she wasn't going to be goaded into a title shot on little notice, she acquiesced and, in a nice bit of irony, dropped her title in the exact same way she won it.
Paige's former NXT colleagues, Emma and Alexa Bliss, registered their shock on Twitter:
The Divas division is thin on viable title contenders at the moment, so it's great to see AJ back. She held the title for almost a year for a reason.
In general, it's been way too long since there was a really good, compelling Divas Championship feud. When was the last one? Mickie James and LayCool from 2010?
AJ and Paige are good enough on the mic and in the ring to get fans into their rivalry. Of course, having them spend more than a minute in the ring would be a good start:
I would like a lengthy championship match between AJ and Paige sometime please. We've got like three minutes total in two matches.— Marc Normandin (@Marc_Normandin) July 1, 2014
The summer is always one of the best seasons for WWE, apart from the buildup to WrestleMania. Between this, Stardust, and Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins, the company is building a great undercard to make up for what is a lackluster main event picture at the moment.
